THE CANADA LABOUR GAFETY) CODE

By proclamation,
the new Canada Labour (Safety) Code goes into effect, January 1, 1968.
This first general safety law ever passed by Parliament places
a general obligation on employers and employees working in industries under
federal jurisdiction to observe appropriate safety and health standards.

FEATURES OF THE LAW

% It is broad in scope, providing for all the elements of a complete industrial safety
program. $< It is complementary to other enactments in the industrial safety field. 3K
Its regulations will be developed in consultation with industry, unions and other interests.
* It provides for basic research into causes and control of accidents, and for a continuing
program of safety education. $< It provides for inspection and enforcement.

WHO IS COVERED

In general, this law applies to employers and employees in works, undertakings or
businesses of an interprovincial, national or international nature and to some others that
have been declared by -Parliament to be for the general advantage of Canada. These are

essentially the same undertakings covered by the Canada Labour (Standards) Code and
other federal labour laws.
