THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM FEB 15 1982 Mayor and Council © February 10th, 1982. Alderman E.W. Mabbett SUBJECT: It seems once again C.P. Rail has caused serious problems for the citizens of Port Coquitlam. The latest being the 30-35 million dollar upgrading request to the Provincial Government, so Commuter Rail could be instituted on their tracks between Port Coquitlam and Vancouver by September 1982 as promised by Minister W. VanderZalm. Over the years Port Coquitlam Citizens have been faced with numerous problems created by C.P. Rail such as: 1) Blocking highway crossings for long periods of time. 2) Loud banging of boxcars in their switching operations especially late at night. 3). No concrete action on better storage of hazardous material cars 4) The run around this City experienced over several years in being lead to believe that Marathon Realty the real estate arm of C.P. Rail was going to build a large shopping centre at Shaughnessy and Lougheed. . The several years of not providing adequate water services to the extended yard area, which our Fire Chief had requested for the safety of everyone in Port Coquitlam. It is hard to understand why C.P. Rail doesn't co-operate to a greater degree, when something as important to the Lower Mainland as Commuter Rail is required. As Mr. K. Ballantyne reports in a recent publication C.P. Rail owes its beginning to concessions in land and rights away, given by the early Canadian pioneers to get rail development. I am sure that when this land was turned over to them it was meant to serve the needs of all Canadians. It is time C.P. Rail recognized the need to be a good corporate company: and give up the idea that Governments have unlimited funds to draw on whenever a new service to the people of Canada is required.
