B2 Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 22, 1991 —— Rupert's Bogeys take SKB» Icebreaker Prince Rupert’s Bogey’s Bombers came through with a six- win, one-loss record that was good enough to win top money of $1,200 at the 12-team ninth annual SKB Molson Wreckers’ ‘Ice- Breaker Classic’ men’s sio-pitch softball tournament in Terrace on Mother’s Day weekend. Bogey’s best Westpoint Rentals in the overall final 3-1. Westpoint went home with runnerup money of $700. Terrace Inn grabbed third place by losing a couple of squeakers. In the Championship double knockout section they made it to the 7A’ side final where they lost 3-2 to Bogey’s. Then they dropped to 'B’ side and lost 4-3 to Westpoint. Third money was $400. The defending champion hosts from last year (SKB Molsons) wound up in fourth place. On the consolation side, Thom- hill Pub picked up $100 for beat- ing Motley Crew 23-8 in the final. Motley Crew had to be satisfied with two dozen cold ones as run- nerup. oe Three individual trophies were handed out. Bogey’s Ron Hakida was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Fred Lindsay of SKB was picked as best offensive player, while Phil Webb of West- point was selected best defensive player. Teams were split into three groups of four for an initial round- robin playoff. The top two then advanced to the double K-O cham- pionship side while the bottom two from each group went into the single consolation playoff. After placing second in their four-team, round-robin section on a two-and-one record, they advanced to the fin in four straight, beating Terrace’s Westpoint Rentals 3-1 in the championship game. The victory was worth $1,200 to the team. This opening tourney put the local softball season in full swing. als where they went undefeated | Smithers outruns Skeena-Cal combo Terrace competitors from Skeena Junior and Caledonia Senior sec- ondary schools combined teams for their annual track and field meet, but they still finished 40 points pehind the winning gang from Smithers. The Skeena/Cal combines took the runnerup spot with 234 points. Smithers emerged with 274 points. Prince Rupert placed far back in third with 106 points, and Stewart surprised everyone with a fourth- place finish on 87 points. — Other overall! team scores were 65 for Queen Charlottes, 56 for Houston, and 35 for all others. Skeena/Cal produced aggregate winners in three of the six age categories. He racked up 49 points on the day with six first-place fin- ishes. He won the bantam boys’ division. Jassie’s brother Kannin won the juvenile boys’ section with 20 points, while Megan Reid had 28 points for the juvenile girls’ title. Other aggregate winners were Michelle Brown of Smithers for bantam girls (26 points); Trish Nelson of Smithers for midget giris (21 points); and Brad Bald- win of Smithers for midget boys (18 points).
