Esther Shimazu is a Japanese-American
anist from Hawai, Her sculptural work in
ceramics has received international recog-
nition for her use of the naked female
figure. She is a master of hanclenilding

with elay, with a strong knowledge of

analonvy, proportion as well as the expres-
sive potential of form. Her stoneware fig-
urcs are Completely handbuilt and they arc
fired unglazed, with only minimal staining
lo reinforce the obvious and potent con-
nection between clay and skin. The forms
are created in section and assembled to
complete the figures, usually organized in
complex and meaningful postures, While
at Emily Carr, Esther will teach a 3 weeks
3 credits class on figurative clay
hamibuilding, from July 5-23. During that
time, she wall constrict parts and cements
for a number of figures (and very whimst-
cal dogs as well) that she will then assem-
ble during the two-day weekend waork-
shop.

The three-week class is for students and
professionals with poor knowledge of the
basic principles of the ceramic process. It
will bea highly informative hands-on stu-
dio class where participants will develop
their own work under the supervision and
guidance of a master of the genre. The
two-day weekend workshop is open to
anyone interested in art, sculpture and
figurative work. Esther will also talk about
her work and issues in figurative ceramic:
sculpture im a slide lecture, part of the
workshop.

We at ECTAD are very excited in hosting
Esther Shimazu this summer and we look
forward te her interaction with the ceramic

An Unique Opportunity to Meet
Gherghina Costea- A Prominent Roma-
nian Ceramics Artist,

Gherghina Costea is a leading Romanian
ceramist and a ovember of the Ramanian
Artists Association. She graduated in 1978
ind worked as an associate designer for
the lozal porcelain industry from 1978 to
19849. Her exhibitions al the Galateea Gal-
lery, 1983 and 1988, and Simeza Gallery,
1998. in Bucharest and a solo exhibition at
the Herriger Gallery, 1993, in Erfstadt,
Germany, were considered by critics as
significant contributions to Romanian and
intemational modern ceramic art. She has
also exhibited in France, Czechoslovakia,
italy, Egypt and Belgium.

Gherghina will be in Vancouver during
the week of July (2 and would like to meet
informally with local artists preferably ata
gallery with their works.
