s “HE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0) UJ N C : q MEMORANDUM JAN 14 1980 TO: Mayor and Council January 11, 1980 FROM: Public Works Committee Report of the Public Works Committee Meeting held on January 8th, 1990. IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman E.W. Mabbett Alderman L.M. Traboulay F.E. Peters, City Engineer Item I Re: Traffic:Lane Arrangement at Pitt River Fd./ Shaughnessy Intersection Alderman Keryluk through Co‘incil had asked for a look at the north appreach to the above intersection because ofa hazard to traffic resulting from two lanes going through the intersection at the same time. The Committee looked at alter- natives for the treatment of this intersection including the marking of two separate lanes and the widening of .the south side to allow a separate left turn on both the north and the south sides. YThe Committee recommends the alternative shown in the attached Sketch Ne. © which results in the north approach being reduced by painted lines on the pavement to one lane. The advantage of this treatment over the others is that backed up traffic is kept clear of the right turn lane and that the through lane lines up with the road on the other side of the intersection. It also eliminates the hazard of having two vehicles going straight through the intersection at the same time and trying to merge at the other side of the intersection. The disadvantages are that through traffic is delayed by left turning traffic and the capacity of the approach'is reduced. It was felt that the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Mary Will Road and Pitt River Road would reduce the amount of through traffic at this intersection and therefore the effects of this proposed restriction would not be too great. As it will be some time before we can do any painting on the roads anyway, the other signals will probably be in before this work can be done. ~ /eves
