The protestors were read a press release from federal New Democratic leader Aud- rey McLauchlin condemning the assassina- tion in Guatemala City on Jan. 14 of Hector Oqueli, a leader of El Salvador’s National Revolutionary Movement, and Gilda Flores of the Social Democratic Party of Guatem- ala. Salvadoran and Guatemalan right- wing death squads have been implicated. The government of President Alfredo Cristiani has arrested Col. Guillermo Alfredo Benavides Moreno and eight other officers in connection with the massacre of the Jesuit priests who headed the University of Central America last November. But the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, and other Salvadoran organizations have charged that the arrests are simply a smokescreen by the fascist ARENA party to get more aid from the United States.
