Ai2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 6, 1997 soccer tourne draws se crowds NEARLY 200 athletes along with hundreds of spectators and supporters deseended on Terrace for an all Native soccer tourna- ment two weekends ago. Eight soccer teams from communities all over the northwest were in town for the foumament, which organizers hope to make into an annual event. “Tl was quite surprised with the tumout considering it was our first try al a tournament like this,’’ says event organizer Trevor Stewart. “A lot of fans came to watch.” Games varied from close matches to blow-outs, with the finals pitting Kispiox against Kitwanga. The first half was a close defensive battle, but Kitwanga scemed to tire in the second and Kispiox rallied to take the win. Kitamaat Village placed third. By tas EIGHT SOCCER teams competed in a tournament here two weekends ago. This game saw the Kitamaat Braves defeat the Greenville Athletics. Stewart says he’s had great response from all the teams about the event. Fans choose favourites at speedway TERRACE SPEEDWAY fans got a chance to vote for their favourite racers before rain turned the track into a river July 19. Crowd pleasers turned out to be #6 Albert Weber in the Sportsman class, #15 Darcy McKeown in the. Hobby Class, and #406 Claus and Morwyn Wolnowski, and Randy Chalifoux in the Street class. Meanwhile racing action on July 19 included victory for #54 Mike Lemky in the Sportsman Dash and Main, with #18 Cori Lemky taking the Heat. won Dash, Heat and Main in the A Hobby class, while #97 Jules Lafrance took all three in the B Hobby event. Rick Meyer, #351, won the A Street Dash, with #227 Vic Johnson taking the Heat and #919 = Fraser Sutherland the Main. The B event went to #351 Len McArthur in the Dash and Main, with the Heat going to #227 Bob Bamett. And the C event Dash and Heat went to #406 Morwyn Wolnowski and the Main to #227 Vicki Johnson. Ladies Northern Open Golf Tournament, set for August 15th to 17th! Over the past several years, the competition has be- come quite fierce ia the Championship flight, drawing, top level golfers from all over the province. Low gross scores for 36 holes have been in the 150’s, with par being 144. This f year promises to be equaliy as competi- tive for those ladies who thrill in the hunt. This is an news with old friends from out of town. The fun continues on Saturday night, with a ban- quet and entertainment provided by the Smithers Golf and Country Club. On the more serious side, Carey and the boys have been grooming the course in ptepa- ration for our tournament, and things look great. The greens are fast this year, and showing a fair amount of break. Tree maintenance has been ongoing, with the removal of dead wood, and extensive replanting. (They still haven’! removed several of the strategically placed nuisances that I would like to see disappear!) The only course change this year has been the changing of white to red stakes on our 10th hole. In the past, a hook shot off the tee resulted in an out-of-bounds,but now the ravine has been determined to be a lateral water hazard. I suspect this will please several golfers who have had trouble in previous years! The foxes have put in an appearance this year, and in consequence, the ducks and geese are less numerous! Our furry friends have been frequenting their favourite haunts, particu- larly the 11th green.
