Stephanie Wiebe The Coquihalla highway'-has ruined my zucchini crop. There’s always a price to pay for progress, but it looks like my Zucchini is the ransom. This highway has changed the lives of many British Colum- bians, but are we aware of the. impact it’s had in Terrace and surrounding areas? For over three years I have enjoyed gardening here in a slug-free ~- euphoria. Having lived -in. the lower mainland, I know. the. of the ever-chomping © garden slug, and have. waged: war armed with slug bait, salt- and rubber boots. But.in Terrace perils there was nary a sug to be seen. The plants bask in the long sum- mer days and gentle rains. Tak- ing an informal poll about’ this slugless phenomenon, I’ve de- veloped three theories: (1) It’s far too cold inthe winter for Slugs to survive. Slugs.are not - able to hibernate — when they attempt” to snuggle ‘together under the snow, they stick to one. aitother and suffocate in each other's frozen slime. (2)The black flies carried them all away. Competing for the title, ‘‘Pest of North’’, the black flies out- number: ‘the slugs, surround them and simply transport them south. (3) The Fraser Canyon road is too treacherous for slug travel, With its winding narrow curves and. steep cliffs, the slugs end up rolling slowly into the canyon: With all of the tourist. traffic and no “Slug Crossing” signs, they haven't got a chance. Personally I favor the last theory, But now my gardening — ‘life has changed forever. Last ‘summer the new Coquihalla -highway opened up with its _ Straight wide lanes and smooth ‘pavement; Hoards of eager slugs. soon discovered: this and are now inching their way up north. It’s a perfect set-up: when un- suspecting travellers stop mid- way to pay their toll, the slimy. creatures can latch onto vehicles and hitch a‘ride anywhere. Of fF course, Terrace being an unex- plored slug wilderness, it’s ripe Freedom of speech — continued from page 6 blacks go to war fora while then +; the white supremist government may then be. willing to sit down and talk: seriously. So Pauline Jewett deserves our respect for saying what she honestly feels, even if we strongly disagree with - her. ‘Has. Frank ever stopped -to wonder why, even though the polls always seem to tell the N.D.P. they’re well liked, when an election comes down there is - - little or no gain in the number of seats they hold? That's simple — they claim to be a democratic party for the people and every time: one of their members speaks out against an issue that goes against party policy it seems they’re hauled up in front of ‘Big Ed’ who publicly humiliates them for daring to . voice an honest opinion that doesn’t conform to. N.D,P. policy. Many people with whom I converse are wondering what ever became of freedom of : speech within the N.D.P. when .& .party leaders seem to feel they, ‘have the power to dictate what a person may or may not say. : _ If-there were more members’ @. like Pauline Jewett and Svend’ § Robinson perhaps there would be a few less people like me who shave decided they don’t wish to . have N.D.P. memberships. I'll vote for them on election day {at least until the Rhino party is revived) and that’s all they need to expect from me until there are major changes made. It’s like I've said before “Put a Liberal, Conservative and an N,D.P. in a room, turn out the light and guess what? You can’t tell-one from another’’. Dif. ferent words maybe, but not one honest answer, just speeches and party policy. It’s really a shame ' — like Twiddle Dee, Twiddle Dumb and Twiddle Dumber, Not much of a choice really. oO Art Grawberg Terrace for piciieer slugs to settle down and munch on‘our tender plants, "namely my zucchini. With Phase 2 of the Coquihalla near comple- tion, the slug colonies are agog with anticipation. A few weeks ago we saw one of the first pilgrim slugs in Ter- trace. -We all -stood around it,. aghast.
