(CP) — An unpleasant surprise greeted a group of 28 Canadian students arriving in New Zealand in late May. There seems to have been a breakdown in com- munication somewhere. They arrived expecting to find vacation jobs awailing them—but found no guarantee of jobs at all. The students said they had been told they could choose among 150 jobs on arrival. They came to New Zealand on a three-month exchange program arranged between the Association of Student Councils of Canada (ACSC) and the New Zealand Student Travel Bureau. — One student, Hugh Tye, from - University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, said he and other students had been told by a representative of AOSC that there would be a list of jobs in New Zealand. But when they arrived there was no list and no guarantee of jobs. Tye said some of the students were really upset. They had money for only a few weeks. Some would have come anyway, but others hadn't enough money to stay for long. Several had spread out over the country in search of work, NO GUARANTEES The director of the New New Zealand Student Travel Bureau, David Cuthbert, said he could not understand why the Canadian students were told there would be jobs waiting. Such guarantees had never been given in the past. He had sent a cable to AOSC asking for information on the matter. Cuthbert said jobs were arranged for New Zealand students going to Canada on exchange because that was the only wa way they could get'a work_per All the Student Travel Bureau contracted to do for Canadian students was to supply them with two nights’ accommodation and in- formation on accom- modation, taxation, social security and accident com- pensation benefits. In- formation was given on possible jobs, but with no In any case, he said, visiting students usually wanted to move around the country to see as much as possible in the time available, so they did not want permanent work. The bureau was prepared to make ioans available to any in financial trouble. BAD. THIS YEAR Possibly the problem has arisen because the em- ployment situation is more - guarantee. difficult this year than ever in the last generation. New Zealand is one of the few countries which has never experienced any significant level of unemployment since the Second World War— until this year. The figure still is low by. world standards-less than three per cent of the work force—but this is far higher than most young New Zealanders have ever It may become more severe in the next few months during the Southern Hemisphere winter. In the past, people with determination and energy have usually been able to find work-—indeed, there have normally been more vacancies than people to fill them, But this year there is real difficulty in finding work.
