peng A12 - Tha Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 14, 1996 TERRACE & DISTRICT Chamber of Commerce Building Blocks of the Community Chamber home to receive needed interior renovation THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is ready to scale new heights — and tofty ones at that A plan being presented this week to the cham- ber board calls for a complete renovation of the chamber’s existing log building on Hwy16, And part of that renovation includes putting in a loft to expand the square footage of the struc- ture, The plan for new-look premises has evolyed gradually over the last year, says chamber board member Skip Bates. Al first, board members talked about an addi- tion to the building or removing it altogether in favour of a brand new structure. “But we found that was getting too ex- pensive,’’ said Bates. ‘As a spokesperson for the business com- munily we felt we should practice some fiscal restraint so in effect, we’re going to gut the in- side of the building,’* he said, The loft will be under 500 square feet in size which, when combined with the 1,000 square feet or so of main floor space, should be mare than adequate to meet the chamber’s needs. “We want the building to be completely func- tional for the business end and for our tourism function,”’ said Bates. That'll mean the creation of a couple of of- fices and a tourism information-reception area. The tourism area will be located in the back of the current building and that means building a new main entrance at the rear. The front porch structure put on a couple of years ago will be removed, If all goes according to plan the renovations should be completed by June, in time for the tourist season. One benefit to locating the chamber’s busi- ness offices with its tourism end is the ability to provide visitor information year round, said Bates. “There are some real efficiencies to be achieved here,” he added, Bates is pleased the log building will be kept as it has real character. “We are a forest community and what better way to reflect that than with this building,” he said. : ACAD esrFA Northwest Mechanical Inc. 5239 Keith Avenue * 635-4770 or 635-7158 WE SELL THE BEST AND SERVICE THE REST Proud Member of the Chamber of Commerce for 11 years. Smith, who ran a communications business here, moved down south last year. The customer service award is new and was introduced last year. Bert’s Deli won. Also new last year, and repeat. ing again this year, is the Contributor to the Arts award. It was won last year by Marilyn Kerr of Sight and Sound for her many years of involvement in promoting music. The two new awards coincide with the chamber’s Busi- ness Executive of the Year award, a fixture of the cham- ber’s since the mid-1980s. Last year’s winner was Sharalyn Palagian, the owner since 1989 of Central Gifts. She's also active on the cham- ber and this year is one of its two vice presidents, Nominations will soon be requested for this three awards, Winners will be honoured at the chamber’s installation ' of officers banquet later this year, Taylor said the chamber is also working on two addi- tional. awards to better-reflect the accomplishments of people in the Terrace area.
