Ministry of Advanced Educa- tion and Job Training has an- nounced it will match dollar-for- dollar all private donations made for post-secondary bur- saries and scholarships, and Northwest Community College registrar Brian Loptson says it’s long-awaited good news for NWCC’s endowment fund. ‘*] know of at least one donor . who was waiting for this an- nouncement to determine the size of his donation to the en- _ | dowment fund,’? Loptson com- mented, ‘‘It benefits the college not only by increasing the amount but also by giving donors incentive to contribute.”? The budget for the matching grants is $2 million for the entire province, and the grants will ap- ply to donations received be- - tween July of this year and April. 1988. Eligible donors include in- dividuals, businesses; industry and community organizations. Writing program begins Thornhill Elementary parents spent a few hours in the class-- room on Oct. 30 taking part in the Thornhill Elementary Writ- ing School. After school prin- cipal Bob Peacock explained the ‘Writing School’ format to the parents, and they moved to their individual classrooms to write a Hallowe’en story with their children. Peacock explained that a ‘Writing School’ is a school where the entire student body follows the same writing format, but at their own individual grade levels, He said the main objective for the morning session with parents was to show them what the pro- gram is all about and to teach them some of the skills involved so they are able: to work with their children at home.. He explained that the main objective of the program is to teach students writing skills first, then add the grammar ° § later. *‘It’s a language arts skill with the emphasis on writing. The typical grammar skills are then brought into the writing process Water — continued from page 3. Terrace, as well as to provide a long-term water servicing stra- tegy to assist with the direction and servicing of future growth and development in the area.’’. He explained that there is little © water supply information avail- able for the area at the present time and it is necessary to obtain as much information as possible to assist the Regional District and its consulting engineers. Robinson also told . Terrace North residents that the Region- al District and City of Terrace administrations are currently working out the details for a Jf possible extension of fire protec- tion services to the Terrace North area on a contract basis with the city. He said he expects a referen- dum on the issue will be held sometime this winter. later,”” he said. “IVs no longer isolated as grammar,” “but grammar is a part of the writing process.’’ give us a call. He added that — some corporations, like Alcan, also have matching grant pro- grams for employee donations. The government program will _ effectively double any donation to the endowment fund. * Scholarships and bursaries are created by the interest from the’ endowment fund, which Lopt- son said currently stands at about $110,000.
