ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE

For several months now it has occurred to me to pass
onaconcern of mine. We should be closely examining
some of the firing methods used just for special effects
in pottery, and the long-term effects these methods
have on our environment.

When queries are made by students about salt firing,
or a discussion of salt glazes with fellow potters
occurs, I have voiced my disapproval, and have
noticed several eyebrows raise or ears perk up. The
thought apparently crosses their minds for the first
time, and I realized that many people “hadn't even
thought about it".

For those of you who don't know, during the process
of salt firing, salt is added through the port holes,
separates into soda and chlorine, The soda combines
with the coloured slips on the pot surface, and even-

‘tually forms an orange-peel glaze finish. The chlorine
escapes as chlorine gas into the atmosphere. Chlorine
gas is one of the major elements responsible for the
breakdown of the protective ozone layer that sur-
rounds our planet.

Ifyou use the salt glaze firing method or are consider-

ing trying it, please think about the environmental
damage you will cause to our planet.
