Th er Chai Well, another month has flown by and a busy time ir was. Time to look up and draw a breath before the AGM and Made of Clay. Clay ‘98 (Our Finest Work is now over and it looked good. Thanks to Ann Rosenberg of the Community Arts Council of Wancouver Gallery and her volunteers for installing our show. A sharp installation made our finest work look great. Thanks also to Debra Sloan, Laura van der Linde and Jane Marthews for cheir organizational efforts Plans are underway for another social event scheduled to be held Wednesday, May 27 at Capilano College in North Vancouver. See page 6 for more details. If you are interested in helping owt contact Ronda Green at 921 - 9888, John Cloutier informs me that now is the time to appeal to potters for plates for our second “From che Oven and the Kiln” event, to be held in October, A tax receipt will be issued. Money raised by this event goes into the scholarship fund administered by the North West Ceramics Foundation. Although it seems that potters are constantly asked for donations from all quarters, it is through your generosiry thar these initiatives are successful. If everyone chooses a couple of events ro swpport each year, it will not seem too onerous. It is through these fundraising events that the Porters’ Guild is able ro fulfill irs educational mandate, Because of the success of last year’s event, we have been able to re-establish our scholarship program. So, a plate or plates! Foundation Lottery for Pottery was a grear success and we succeeded in raising over $9000 -final accounting to be reported in the next newsletter. A special thank you to all the - donating artists and the many volunteers who worked so smoothly. Thanks also co our special guests Katherine Grecsinger and James Barber, who emceed, and to Ken Mayer for allowing us to store donated pieces in his studio. We would love to get some feed-back from those who participated in the event. The board will be considering the future of Lotrery for Pottery. Can we really expec artists co donate so frequently! Should we consider at least paying artists the wholesale price of their work? Might the Lottery evencually become an importance forum for displaying new work to a wide audience? Should the exhibition formar prior to che Lorrery be extended over a longer period? These and other issues are under review. Please write to us if you have opinions. Incidentally, the early bird draw for early donations was won by Jane Wolters from Chemainus, A letter from Melanie Corbin abour che unfairness of excluding part-time Gallery of BC Ceramics staff from applying for Foundation Scholarships has been considered by the Board. It was agreed thar the policy would be changed so that part-timers can apply. The deadline for scholarship applications has com and gone and we have on hand seven applicants for Jump Seart and four for the Potrers’ Guild Scholarship. These submissions will be juried shortly and awards will be announced at the Potters’ Guild AGM, Priday May 1, 7 PM in the Quarterdeck Room of the Granville [sland Hoel. A Maureen Wright Scholarship was awarded to Sarah Beck to attend a workshop on majolica given by Karen Opas in Williams Lake. A meeting with the head chef of the Delta Pacific Hotel, Wolfgang Leske, has been scheduled for April 22 in preparation for the next “From the Oven amd the Kiln" fundraiser. Last year we were able to raise $3400 for the scholarship endowment fund and support for the Potters’ Guild Scholarship and Educarion Fund. Would potters be able to let me know a few specific company names that they have successfully Purchased home insurance from, Also knowing whac the actual underwriting company name is would also be helpful. We want it to be small enough for two or three people to handle comfortably, say 40 to 50 cubic feet. The design should be fairly simple, preferring the anagama style. Can you put us in touch with anyone who has experience in building a kiln like this? We have done some studying and [ myself have assisted in firing one a few times over the years. We would really like to have someone help wich the construction, maybe this person putting on a workshop at our home with us providing all the materials, etc, We are involved in a pottery club that has a few people interested in che construction of such a kiln.
