Lakolse Ave, f 996-6012.) ¢ ' Sim-0i-Ghets The House of Sim-0i-Ghets is a beautiful native style long house made of Red Cedar. It was constructed in April of 1970 because tourists and locals alike were looking for a place where they could buy native arts and crafts or where they could find a fishing guide, The construction of the building, by the Tsimpsian natives of the Kitsumkalum reserve, was the idea of Mr. Clifford Bolton. it was done completely by hand using an old 1956 Ford to puil the timber out of the forest. At first the people planned on financing it with Band funds, but half way through when funds ran out, they applied for government grant. The building took one year to construct, Alex Bolton, Band Manager and his wife Annette run the store with assistance from Vicky Roberts, . The purpose is to sell Canadian Indian Craft whieh they. order from a pool in ‘9. Ottawa, sponsored by the Department of Indian Affairs, They specialize in leather work especially moccasins and jackets and all sorts of bead work. Wood carvings from all over Canada are very popular. You can find authentic Iriquois ceremonial masks. They have beautiful birch bark baskets from the Prairies and Cedar work from Kitimat Village. Apart from the miriad of lovely Native handicrafts you ean hire a fishing guide and boat to take you up any of the f many rivers in the area to fish and enjoy the scenic country. In one corner of the store is a junk table. On it among the old bottles and woven baskets you can see some old instruments which haven't been played since 1941. These come from the original Village of Port Essington, at the mouth of the Skeena River, which was burnt out about ten years aga after which the reserve was moved to it’s present location, Part Essington was possibly the only purchased reserve in Canada. The instruments were found recently in an old house in Prince Rupert and arrived at Sim-Oi-Ghets only two weeks ago. It is assumed they were the ones used by the Port Essington Band. If anyone is interested in having a garment of leather made they can order it at the store. Many people are already ordering their Christmas -presents, The store will be Staying open until Christmas to accommodate everyone. The people also teach classes in Indian crafts with teachers from all over British Columbia.: Rena Point of Chilliwack will be teaching wool spinning for sweaters, they will offer classes in wood carving, Cedar bark and root basket weaving, mocecassin making, bead wor and Native dancing. The Band has applied for a government Brant to cover the expenses of materials and teachers . salaries. So if you are interested in the crafts of our _ original Canadians, pay them a visit at Sim-Oi-Ghets and I’m sure you will want to keep going back. ‘ Available at SAV-MOR BUILDERS CENTRE Ltd.
