The final race of the North- west running season attracted 73 -competitors from Terrace, Telkwa, Smithers, Kitimat, Hazelton and Prince Rupert, Clark was timed at one hour, 10 minutes, 15 seconds. The first runner across the line was Prince Rupert’s Mike Flagel who won the men’s open category in 1:14:25. Veteran Ed Ansems of Ter- race finished second, only 17 seconds slower than Flagel. Ansems topped the masters’ men category. The top female was Janis German of Rupert. She was followed across the line by two Smithers runners — Anita Bush and Elizabeth Zweck, in that order. Runnerup to Flagel in open men’s was Smithers’ Matt Cachia while Hazelton’s Dave Allwood took third. Ray Leonard of Rupert was about six minutes behind Ansems for masters. Third place went to Rupert’s Ray Herman- son, Peter Douglas, Telkwa’s Canadian juvenile steeplechase champion, won the 10-K section with a time of 34:22. He raced in the boys’ under-19 section. Another Telkwa runner. — Graham Mackin — placed sec- ond, with Robert Millar of Smithers in third for the under-19, The only under-19 girl was Cynthia Kenyon of Terrace. For open imen in 10-K, three. ‘Prince Rupert runners topped the list. It was Rod Giles (34.48), -then Frank Falvo (34.58) and Brian Dudoward (35.51). Open women saw two more ‘Rupert athletes on top — Rose- Marie Cheer first and Deidre Twohig second. Gail Sheasby of Terrace was third. In masters’ men 10-K, Geoff Phillips won. The Terrace run- ner was followed by David Luscumb (Rupert) and Jack Worobey (Terrace) respectively. Marilyn Earl of Terrace was . the only female 10-K com- petitor, The five-kilometre event had almost half the number turning out, Peter Hynd of Smithers turn- ed in the best time (16:48) in placing first overall for 13-to-19 boys. He beat out Terrace’s David Shepherd by only three seconds. David Edmonds ‘of Terrace was third. Megan Reid of Terrace was the only 13-to-19 girl. For under-13 boys, Brent Cheer of Rupert won, with Nathan Northridge of Terrace second and Dale Young of Kitimat third, The only open man was Roy Vick of Terrace. Three Terrace runners were one-two-three in Open women. They were Becky Easton, Jan Hart and Kathy Simpson. Masters’ men in the five-K went to Mike Reid of Terrace. He was followed by Ian Closs and Angus McLeod, both of Kitimat, In masters’ women it was Cathie Frezell of Terrace, Judi Anderson of Terrace, and Lillian Nelson of Prince Rupert, in that order, The race started and finished _ at Northwest Community Col-. ° lege.
