Monday, December 6, 1994 is the national day of remembrance and action on violence against women, The Terrace Women’s Resource Centre are sending out an invitation to everyone to come and gather together in remem- ~-brance of-the 14 young women of _ year '_ engineering planning to take her the Montreal massacre that took place December 6, 1989, T’s also to remember all other - women who have died or been in- jured through male violence in this country, The 14 young women killed in the Montreal Massacre “were killed simply because they were women’? and because they were women who wanted to become engineers. — The women killed were: -W@iGenevieve Bergeron, 21, a second-year scholarship student in civil engineering ‘WHelene Colgan, 23, a fourth- ‘student in mechanical master’s degree , : MNathalic Croteau, 23, in her final - year of mechanical engineering MBarbara Daigneault, 22, a fourth-year mechanical engincer- _ing student and worked as a teaching assistant WAnne-Marie Edward, 21, a first-year student in chemical enginecring MMaud Haviemick, 29, a second-year student in engineer- ing materials and a graduate in environmental design WBarbara Klucznick -Widajewicz, 31, a second-year ~ student specializing in engincer- ing materials ’ EIMaryse Laganiere, 25, worked in the budget department of the Ecole Polytechnique MMaryse Leclair, 23, in her final = year =o of ~—s mechanical engincering MAnne-Marie Lemay, 27, in her final, year of mechanical engineering MSonia Pelletier, 28, was to graduate the next day in mechani- ‘cal engineering. She was awarded her degree posthumously : MMichcle Richard, 21, a second-year student in engincer- ing materials WMAnnic St-Amecault, 23, a second-year mechanical engineer- ing student gAnnic Turcolte, 21, a. first- year “student in enginecring _ materials. The Montreal Massacre took place on the afternoon of Decem- ber 6, 1989 when Mark Lepine walked into Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique carrying a semi- automatic rifle. Once inside, Lepine carefully separated the women from the men. “He then shot and killed 14 women and injured 13 more be- fore he finally turned the gun on himself. In the five years since the tragic deaths of these 14 young women, violence against women has not _ stopped. ‘In: Canada, an average of 100 women die cach year as a direct result of violence by their male partners. One. in eight Canadian women is regularly abused by. her hus- band or male partner. One in four women in Canada _can expect to e secually assaulted at least.once in her lifetime, half of them before they reach the age > af 17. The highest rates of violence were reported by women in Brit- ‘ish Columbia - 59 per cent of B.C, women. In our own area, murderers are still being sought for deaths - one ‘in Terrace and two in Smithers - all for the deaths of 16-year-old girls. ‘December 6 has now been declared’ National Day of Remembrance and action on violence agalnst women, A white ribbon has been chosen -as a symbol of our deisre to see this violence stopped. “The while ribbon campaign was ~iniliated by men who saw that, since men are usually the men committing violent acts, other - Mien must speak and act strongly to see the violence end. Women and men who wear white ribbons on the weck of De- -cember 5-12 are declaring that they object to violence.
