Issue — Mareh, 1965 THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER Local 1-85 Donates $15 OO To Centre Delegates attending the 28th Annual Meeting of Local 1-85 IWA, March 14, in Port Alberni, demonstrated their com- munity spirit by unanimously voting $1,500 to the Alberni Valley Health Centre. This long-needed Health Centre, presently under con- struction in Alberni, will service the people in Alberni, Port Alberni and surrounding areas. Two-thirds of the cost of the project came from fed-- eral and provincial govern- ment grants. The remaining third must be raised through public or business donations. The meeting, attended by seventy-three delegates and two guest speakers also do- ‘nated $200 to the Frolek Saw- mill strikers and approved a motion to change the quorum for meetings from fifty to forty members. ‘In the election of Regional Council delegates the follow- - ing were elected: M. Landry, W. Tyreman, N. McMillan, J. Kosterow, M. Kokura, A. Anderson, W. Allen, C. Rous- seau, E. Wood, G. Ingram, W. Hawkes, W. Anderson, J. Squire, E. Foxcroft. Guest speakers were Re- gional President, Jack Moore and International 2nd Vice- President, Ron Roley. Moore in a hard-hitting ad- dress stated that more con- centration must be given to convincing every member in the IWA to assume his or her share of the fight to better wages and working conditions in the industry. He suggested that if every member in the IWA were to show the spirit displayed by the IWA Port Alberni mem- bers during last year’s Office Workers’ strike, the Union would be invincible. “This job must be under- taken at once for the good of the Union,” he concluded, “so that we are solidly united to meet the employers in the next round of negotiations.” Ron Roley gave a graphic picture of the organizing problems in the deep South. He stated that the employers there go out of their way to provoke strikes, knowing that the State courts will back them against the Union. He said that in one instance armed men openly intimi- dated employees while they were casting their ballots dur-. ing a strike vote. But in spite of the intimidation, he stated, the IWA was making its greatest gains in these areas. The Officers’ Report ac- corded high praise for the conduct of Local 1-85 mem- bers during the tidal wave disaster and Office Workers’ strike last year in Port Alberni. The Report stated in part: “The tidal wave disaster will be long remembered. Our membership is to be congrat- ulated for the manner in which it accepted nature’s rampage and tackled the job of cleaning the mess of debris and damage caused by the flood. Our membership was also most generous in aiding fellow members and neigh- bors stricken by the flood. “The Office Workers’ strike, although not a disaster, was an event that will also be long remembered by our members and particularly by MB. & P.R. Your officers were very pleased with the manner in which the membership ac- cepted its responsibilities along with the other unions of the Alberni Valley.” Other items contained in the Report showed: The Local Union was in a good financial position with a healthy increase in cash and assets over the previous year. The overall donations made to various organizations dur- ing the year totalled $10,- 867.50. A continuing interest in education on the part of the members. The Report also stated that the Local had been successful in winning a number of griev- ances, “not because manage- ment is getting easier to deal with, but because of more militancy on the part of the committee members and the crew.” Dca ‘FLY B.C.
