SHERBROOKE, Que, (CP) — A bullet-riddled door was
among the first exhibits introduced, as evidence today.as
i J udge Denys Dionne opened a long-delayed inquest into the
| ‘Dec. 23 police shooting of carpet layer Serge Beaudoin.

The museum room of the Shérbrooke’ Seminary. was
+ packed with journalists, lawyers and curious onlookers ‘as -
the door, with 21 bullet holes in it, was introduced by lawyer
Francois Doyon, acting for the Crown. -

It was through that motel room door that municipal police
from Sherbrooke and nearby Rock Forest fired the volley of
shots that killed Beaudoin, 33, and lightly wounded his
workmate, Jean-Paul Beaumont, 32, two days. before
_ Christmas. .

Police raided the motel, looking for two't men who’ had *
robbed and.killed a Brink's guard the’ previous.day. ‘They
apparently mistook Beaudoin and Beaumont for the wanted

men, The Brink's guard’s killers and the $47,000 they stole .

have yet to be found. '

‘The first witnesses at the inquest teday were police .
technicians. Besides the mangled wodden door, exhibits
filed included bullets that had lodged in the walls over the
bed where Beaudoin was sleeping and four bullets that had
‘slammed into a wail in an adjacent room where an
Edmonton couple were sleeping.

Photographs of Room 5 at Le Chatillon motel, where the

" incident occurred, showed a bloodstain on the ftoor between

Beaudoin's and: ‘Beaumont’ F) beds.

“In his opening remarks, Dionne announced thal artists

would be allowed to make sketches at the inquest bul he -

maintained the order he had issued last week barring
photographers ; and cameramen, who are normally allowed
to shoot pictures at Quebec inquests, ue

“Dionne was’ appointed special coroner by the Quebec
Justice Department two weeks ago, replacing Denis
Boudrias, who was disqualified by a Quebec Superior Couri
judge at the request of the lawyer representing Sherbrooke
police. vo
Lawyer Michel Proulx atgued successfully that Boudrias
had made remarks to the ews media showing thal he had
prejudged the case,

Boudrias himself had been appointed special coroner in _

December after the regular Sherbrooke coroner withdrew
because of his acquaintance with police officers implicated.

About 30 witnesses are to be called al the inquest, which is

expected to last a week,

Coroners’ inquests . are “held in: Quebec to delermine
whether there ‘is.any criminal responsibility allached to
violent or suspicious deaths. A coroner's finding is no!
binding. on’ the Crown,

Gerry anguishes over grave

CALGARY (cP) — Dudley Gerry angulshes over a
question revolving around two bodies ~- the one placed in, ©
“his brother's grave after his death in the Second World War, ¢
and the one that. remained undiscovered until last week in
Duteti marshlands.

' Gerry said in an interview that he is confused by the
discovery of the second body. .

“Yn just glad my parents weren L avound. to hear ‘of
this,” he said of his mother and father, who died thinking
Reginald Gerry had been identified and properly buried,

The. confusion began when Dutch authorities said. ©
recently ‘they had discovered the remaing of Reginald in
marshlands. That was apparently where the young RAF ©
pilot's Wellington bomber went dawn with a crew. of five as
it headed back towards ‘Britain after an ‘Aug,’ 3, 1940, -
boinbing mission over’ the German city of Hamburg.

Tracked down in Calgary as the only jikely relative of
Reginald, Dudley told of the much: earlier burial.

He was only 11 years old at the fime, but He retnembers
Red Cross authorities Informing his parents a body that had
washed ashare from the sea had been identified as that of

Reginald. The discovery was made three months after the

lane was shot down.

whose remains were discovered two years ago In Holland,
was enlisted by authorilies to try and find Reginald's
