Donna Lutz, teacher and principal for the newest and most remote school in District 88 — Meziadin . °° jokingly offers technical advise to Terry Anderson, the district’s director of music. ~ programs. Anderson was taping some music for Lutz to use with her young Students. in thelr. one. ; room schoolhouse. Who is... by Betty Barton Donna Lutz is a pioneer of the first school in Meziadin, which ‘opened in January of this year. She is also the principal and only teacher in this new one-room schoolhouse in the Nechako High- ways yard at Meziadin Junction. _ At present, Donna teaches 13 students from kindergarten to Grade 3. These are the children of employees of Elsworth Logging, - Ministry of Highways and those from a small subdivision there. The parents are extremely glad to have the facility there so the little ones don’t have to travel all the way {to Stewart. Donna explains that the district is sensitive to the needs of the parents and their children. Grades 4 through 12 still make the daily commute. Donna says it’s not as stressful or tiring for the older children to travel. The youngsters have their own little ‘school bus which delivers them to Donna Lutz? the Elsworth camp and the subdiv- ision. Donna says she quite likes the isolation’ of Meziadin, about 40° kilometers east of Stewart. She had: previously taught in three remote villages in Alaska over a 12-year period, so she thinks of Meziadin as quite a cosmopolitan centre in comparison. "It’s a nice place" says Donna. The other three loca- tions were fly-in situations. At least at Meziadin, there is a road. Donna doesn’t drive, though. She hasn’t had to for so many years that now she’d rather just catch a. ride with someone if she really needs to get to town. When I interviewed Donna in late May, it was her first trip. to Terrace since January. The purpose of the trip was a management team meeting. She’d been to Porcher © Island outside of Prince: Rupert over the Easter break to visit her husband. He is a commercial fish- erman there. This summer, Donna will join him in his commercial fishing | operation. . Every few _weeks, he drives-in to visit her in cher teacherage at Meziadin pro- vided by Schoo! District 88. Donna says the district has been great about ordering things. ‘Because she is teaching alone, she relies ‘heavily on music tapes, © videos and films to give the stu- dents an outside perspective ‘on their lessons. Also, various of the resource people from the School District drop in on their way to and from Stewart. Donna says "Even Terry (Anderson, director of “music, School District #88) comes |: with guitar in hand." ‘The children have a.school garden. The bok choy isn’t doing well, says Donna, - but the Jettuce is growing fine. The parent group is very supportive. They organize activities and fund- raise for special events. Next year, they hope to organize a trip for the students to Terrace. : This Easy Book makes. a perfect bedtime story. .
