As we enter 1993 I believe that we are starling to see results from our efforts to tackle some of the problems facing government and industry. Two. major mines have been issued mine development certifi- cates, the Mt. Polley and Stronsay projects. 1992 was the first full year of operation for the mine develop- ment assessment process. By the end of the year, a total of six cer- tificates had been issued and I think that now the process is starting to move more quickly, In 1993, I expect’ to see up ta a dozen certificates issued. I expect we shall sce industry’s, proposed changes to have the en- vironment impact assessment and project review process mn by a neutral agency. I will support legislalion which includes timeliness, by selling timelines for review by both pub- lic and government agencics, The federal/provincial partner. ship agreement on. mineral devel- opment. was signed. It’s a five year agreement = extending through io 1996, and worth $19 million overall, featuring scientific, policy, marketing and public information programs, The Commission on Resources and, the Environment, ‘has “gatten up’ ‘and ‘running this past year, and’ has, I believe, already begun to lower the temperature of some of the high-profile land-use conflicts in the province, I was pleased that CORE’s first report was a review of the issues and options for the Windy Crag- py\Tatshenshini. I am pressing for speedy resolu- tion of more of these land-use is- sues so that everyone knows where the protected areas are as well as the integrated manage- ment arcas, : I think that the past year has brought home to all of us, so that there can. no longer be doubt in anyone’s mind, that mining is facing a new reality. There is no tuming the clock back to the way it used to be. In- . Slead we are mecting both the is- sucs and the global competition as they come. Honour known Friday TERRACE — We'll know this Friday if the city has been chosen as the Mining Associa- tion of B.C.’s “Mining Com- munity of the Year’’. ‘This is the first year for the award which is designed to recognize a community for its contribution to the mining in- dusiry. Three other communities, Princeton, Kimberley and Sandon, located in the Kootenays, have also been nominated. A winner will be announced Friday during ‘‘Mining Week’” activities in Vancouver. Terrace has done a lot in promoting mining awareness,” said mining association public relations spokesman Ida Makaro of the nomination. She said the city has con-. sistently supported ‘‘Mining Week” and has helped spread the word that mining is impor- tant to the area economy, The association has. two other awards, mining person of the. year and mining industry person of the year, Anne Edwards In 1993, when the investor asks ‘Why should I invest in B.C.?", There will be no doubt that the answer will be strong, clear and convincing, and based on some clear fact: * BC's wide range of high potential mineral environments is still the under-pinning of profitable investment decisions. * B.C’s high quality geos- cience database is maintained by the provincial government. It’s accessibility to the investor and explorationist is the envy of near- ly every jurisdiction with a mineral industry. * Cooperation between industry and government in key resource and development areas such .as reclamation and acid rock drainage, have. resulted. in B.C. . ming: 3: ‘world: leader i in: echnologies, of ports, roads, railways, power, water and communities are well- developed, modern and efficient. * B.C.’s professional service, supply and research sectors are Cont’d Pg.
