Challenging
year ahead

Anne Edwards {s the provin-
cial minister for mines, This is
an excerpt from a speech given
earlier this year.

As we enter 1993 I believe that
we are starling to see results from
our efforts to tackle some of the
problems facing government and
industry.

Two. major mines have been
issued mine development certifi-
cates, the Mt. Polley and Stronsay
projects.

1992 was the first full year of
operation for the mine develop-
ment assessment process. By the
end of the year, a total of six cer-
tificates had been issued and I
think that now the process is
starting to move more quickly,

In 1993, I expect’ to see up ta a
dozen certificates issued.

I expect we shall sce industry’s,
proposed changes to have the en-
vironment impact assessment and
project review process mn by a
neutral agency.

I will support legislalion which
includes timeliness, by selling
timelines for review by both pub-
lic and government agencics,

opment. was signed. It’s a five
year agreement = extending
through io 1996, and worth $19
million overall, featuring
scientific, policy, marketing and
public information programs,

The Commission on Resources
and, the Environment, ‘has “gatten

up’ ‘and ‘running this past year, and’

has, I believe, already begun to
lower the temperature of some of
the high-profile land-use conflicts
in the province,

I was pleased that CORE’s first
report was a review of the issues
and options for the Windy Crag-
py\Tatshenshini.

I am pressing for speedy resolu-
tion of more of these land-use is-
sues so that everyone knows
where the protected areas are as
well as the integrated manage-
ment arcas, :

I think that the past year has
brought home to all of us, so that
there can. no longer be doubt in
anyone’s mind, that mining is
facing a new reality.

There is no tuming the clock
back to the way it used to be. In-

nominated.

A winner will be announced
Friday during ‘‘Mining Week’”
activities in Vancouver.

Terrace has done a lot in
promoting mining awareness,”
said mining association public
relations spokesman Ida
Makaro of the nomination.

She said the city has con-.
sistently supported ‘‘Mining
Week” and has helped spread
the word that mining is impor-
tant to the area economy,

other awards, mining person of
the. year and mining industry
person of the year,
