Treaty inspires museum exhibit By JENNIFER LANG and: singing filled the Royal B.C. Museum ear- lier this year, when Nisga’a elders, dignitaries and puests opened a new exhibit — the Nisga'a Trea- ty Gallery. "It’s a permanent display showcasing the Nisga'a people. and their 113-year struggle to resolve the land question. © . “Looking at the exhibit ‘will’ give people a better understanding of the Nisga’a people,” said .. Fran Johnson, manager of the Ayuukh] Nisga’a de- partment of the Nisga’a Lisims Government. The display uses photo- graphs, portraits, artifacts, maps, video and sounds to bring Nisga’a culture, and the “quest for a treaty, to life: For example, gallery- goers will hear the sound - of a Nisga’a woman sing- ing a traditional song as they gaze at photographs ‘of people and places in the Nass Valley. A large.stone bow! sits on a pedestal at the centre ‘ofthe round room that forms part of the exhibit. It represents the Nisga’a phi- losophy of the Common Bowl, the concept of shar- ~ . ing demonstrated in the feast system — and in the framework of the treaty it- self. mepAtonig” with ail eight vo- lunes of the: Nisga'a, Trea-’ ty; several. other artifacts . ‘are on display, including a ladle, a moon mask and a bent wood box, are dis- played in the Nisga’a ‘Treaty Gallery. Johnson said those artifacts were already: part of the mu- seurm’s collection. Gallery officials expect about a half a million - people a year will see the new exhibit, located inside . the museum’s First Na- tions Gallery. . The museum spearhea- ded the project soon after the treaty received royal assent from Parliament in Ottawa, on April 13, 2000 . — coincidentally, two years ~ to the day before the treaty gallery’s official opening. . Members of the Nisga’a -Ts’amiks Vancouver Soc- ‘iety in the Lower Main- Jand ‘sent a contingent to Victaria for the opening “ceremony, including about 50 dancers. . A delegation of Nisga’a Lisims Government offi- cials, including the elders council and executive members Edmund Wright, Herbert Morven and Jo- seph Gosnell, also atten- ’ ded. ~~ Johnson said two ma- -triarchs, Doris Tate of New _ Aiyansh and Emma Nyce of Gitwinksihlkw, per- formed. the ribbon cutting * ceremony. The ribbon was made from ‘customary cedar bark. ’ Four. chiefs, Horace Stevens from Lakalzap, ‘Jacob Nyce from Gitwink- -~ sihlkw, Rod Robinson from - New Aiyansh and Hubert Stevens from Gingolx, _ called out the Nisga’a name for the exhibit, Hoohlganht Nisga’ a. “The Nisga’a name is rather a tongue- -twister,” Johnson said. “Tt basically means the “treasure, chest of the Nisga’‘a’, meaning a woo- den chest. “It engulfs everything, It holds: everything that is valuable to the Nisga’a.” -The extensive guest list also. included Lieutenant Govemor Iona. Campagno- “Ja, ‘First. Nations leaders, and: provinelal and federal “sy goverment officials.
