Former Terrace ica hockey athlete Jeff Sharples joins the SES Wings. - eter Detrolt Red Jeff Sharples likes | national hockey action Terrace’s donation to the National Hockey League is enjoying his stay in the majors and has high hopes he’ll re- main there, and not be sent back to Portland Winterhawks for an- other year of junior hockey. Defenceman Jeff Sharples, son of Cliff and Irene Sharples of. our fair city, is one of eight rearguards current- ly on the Detroit Red Wings’ roster. With this abundance of blueliners, 19-year-old Jeff is not dressing for every game because only six suit up for each outing. Jeff had played three games as of last Friday. Statistic-wise, he has garnered one assist and spent two minutes in the penalty box. “I'm getting my share of ice time in the games where I’ve dressed, so I can’t complain about idleness,”’ he told us prior to last Friday’s game_against St. Louis. His point and penalty came against Calgary Flames on Oct. 18. For- tunately for Jeff’s family’ and friends, that game was carried on Hockey Night in Canada and we saw him collect his first big league stats. Jeff told us that the Wings will likely ship out a couple of defencemen very soon. He is in the position of having to go back to junior — he can’t be sent down to the lower pro leagues like the American of Interna- tional leagues. “Pm not sure, but I think they can keep me for 10 games and still ship me back to Port- land,’? he said. ‘‘After 10 they have to keep me, and with a season up here the chances of going back to junior for an over-age year are prac- tically zero for next season.”’ . After several years playing minor hockey away from home, Jeff says he’s not homesick. **However, Steve (his apartment-sharing fel- low Red Wing, forward Steve Chiasson) and I aren’t the greatest cooks in the world. It sure would be nice to have Mom around to take care of the cooking angle.”’ As for Detroit — “‘It’s not like walking down the streets of Terrace. We don’t live in the best district by any means and there are several areas close by that we avoid completely.”’ The six-foot, 187- pounder, played all his minor hockey in Terrace and was an outstanding member of Terrace teams that won Peewee, Bantam and Midget pro- continued om page 7 Terrace Men’s Basketball Oct. 21.
