WEDNESDAY, JULY a1, 1974 Take one catalytic converter, “Tnix in two. lankfuls of leaded gasoline and you will end up with dirty air, a ruined con: verter and a substantial repair Sa warns George Bradley, President... of ‘the B.C. Automobile Association, this week, . Mr, Bradley says many of the 1975 new car models will be equipped ‘with catalytic converters, emission control devices designed to meet U.S. alitomotive emission standards or the slightly less stringent Canadian standards, The converter fits Into the exhaust system atid purifies the exhaust. Its destruction by the use of the wrong fuel could - mean a $150 replacement bill. Effectiveness of the’ con- verters is significantly .im- - paired by. fuels that contain even small amounts of lead ar phosphorous and, according to ° the B.C.A.A., If the new, con- verters are ruined by leaded gasoline, the new cars will be - worse. polluters ‘than earlier models. ot However, one of. the safeguards provided on the new cars will be a smailer gas tank opening so the larger nozzels an . the leaded gas pumps will not fil, But, says Bradley, the - safeguard also requires slalions ta be equipped with new hoses and special, nozzels. which, because of strikes and ateél shortages, are not. being manufactured in the required quantities. ; This is just one af the problems facing the car in- dustry which will commence sales of 1975 models In Sep- tember this year. While most U.S. manufactured cars will be filted with the small necked gas tank and converter, Ford Motor Company of Canada and Chrysler Cariada are In- dicating that more than 70 percent of their passenger... vehicles. manufactured in Canada, and for sale in this country, will not be equipped with the catalytic converters. General Motors of Canada, however, have gone all out for converters in thelr new models and.will have most. cars. manufactured here’ in 1976 equipped «with. converters requiring lead-free fuel. The B.C.A.A- anticipates that at the end of 1974, some 124,400 or 2 percent:of cars manuiac- | tured in this country will require unleaded fuels. Club President Bradley says that in 1975 this number will have in- creased to 502,000 or 7 percent. The Increase will continue into 1976 reaching an estimated total of 1,020,000 or 12 percent to a high in 1977 of 1,400,000 or 16 -percent of, all cars in Canada. “With a large number of U.S. vehicles and some Canadian The Year of the Catalyst yehicles demanding lead-free gasoline, the B.C.A,A, took part , ina survey which showed there were already more than 28,000 stations across Canada dispensing unleaded fuel. . By October. of this year in B.C, there will be an estimated 989 outlets for unleaded fuel, 22 percent af stations and by July 1975 Ihe number of outlets will rise to 849, 27 percent of Lotal stations. As good as the figures may seem. from the Canadian viewpoint the total national availability shows that the 1.2 million American travellers expected lo drive in Canada in 75 model cars might be able to locate unleaded gas at one station out of every five, The situation could be worse If Canadian service . stations experience the receat problems of their U.S, counterparts.’ : »° In the U.S.‘ many oil com- panies thal have sold- only regular and premium grades of fue} will not physically be able to handle a third type of gas and therefore will be forced’ to discontinue either regular or premium once unleaded is required. Some U.S. stations, planning tosink an unleaded storage lank beneath their sites have heen hit by the steel shortage which could delay construction of tanks for nearly 18 months. The new nozzle Is n not only for the vehicle fitted with the catalytic converter, but for many others.” General Motors will install the new tank and narrow spout in all U.S, madels whether they have a catalylic converter or not and the other three U.S. manulacturers may follow sult. The U.S, estimate is that although ‘there will ‘be only approximately 10 percent of cars on. the road requiring unleaded fuel by the end of the 1975 .model year, about 62 percent of the. tolal U.S. car population will be able to use it. And there is a brighter side to the catalytic converlessituation says Bradley. In addition tothe decrease in alr pollution, the drivers of catalyst equipped cars will receive a bit better fuel economy and performance. Also when unleaded gasoline is cused in catalyst equipped or non-catalyst equipped late model vars there is increased muffler and spark plug lile. Based on 15,000 miles of in- dividual travel a year, the aulomobile industry estimates these benefits will result in annual maintenance savings of from $25 to $45 per car, Bradley added. : Indian Permit Regulations .
