Distributed by King Featares Syndicat, By Claudette Sandecki The Illustrated Natural History of Canada by John A, Livingston In this 160 page book, the author explains how Canada came to’ be what it is today, beginning four and a half billion years ago when the earth started to take shape as things happened to the sun, The author has divided his book into four sections: the. creation of the Earth and specifically that portion which is now Canada, How Canada was formed through glacial action, ete, How animals and plants evolved or adapted to new life situations to. produce the forms of animal and plant life we know today. And the effect of man on our en- vironment and what we can do to preserve the natural heritage which still exists in remote sections of Canada. There are many school tests which deal with these same topics but few match the relaxed, comprehensible ap- proach to this complex subject. _ Perhaps owing to the Editorial Consultation of Pierre Burton, " anyone can sit down and enjoy reading this book from — cover to cover without ever having previously studied how the Northern Hemisphere came to be, or if you have, you} still learn ‘new things about our country from this book with its 235 illustrations including 65 full color photographs and 40 full color maps. Trifled Weekly Fire Report During the past week the weather has been a mixture of coo] cloudy weather with rain recorded in most of the Prince Rupert forest district. A low to moderate hazard existed throughout the week and only two new fires were reported, bringing this years - total to 162. As of Aug. 18 a total of 1,494 fires have occured in the province compared to 2,404 for the corresponding period of 1971 Costs to extinguish fires this year is roughly $5,300,000, less than last years figure. Cooler temperatures and . widespread showers have reduced the fire hazard to low and moderate in most parts of the province. We have experienced lighting activity in the interior part of | the district and our lookouts and patrol planes are still active in these areas. While we are hoping the hazardous period is over for this year, we could still experience a high hazard in many areas. * Bhone 635-7277 we ae ‘Obituaries REGINALD JAMES ‘LORD ‘The late, Mr. Lord leaves in , passed iaway suddenly August mourning his widow Nancy and. *-14, Funeral services were held son Reg.
