I detected an air of jealousy as they realised that next year
they would be running for re-election and in all probability would
have to fight an election campaign. Alderman Gates kept his sense of

Humour by stating that he was sorry -to see us get re-elected by acclamation |

as the only fun he gets out of elections is "watching others sweat".

Friends

Many, but not as many had there been an election campaign,
orfered congratulations usually followed by the practical thought
that I must have saved a lot of money which otherwise would have been
spent on an election campaign. Incidentally, I never did find
another Michael Wright running for office to whom I could sell my
orand new lawn signs! There were some friends who didn't consider it
necessary to congratulate me on the election victory because to them

there had bpeen no contest.

campaign can be exhaustingand, especially at this time of the year,
results more orten than not in catching a cold or the ‘flu. There are
sressures on ones family during an election campaign and when it was
learned tnat there would be no election there was an intense reeling
of relier that I wouldn't nave to zo out each night seeking support.

The Candidate
