2nd Issue THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER Renee TWO LABOR SCHOOLS © Two important labor schools are being planned for January at the Island Hall Hotel in Parksville. The B.C. 1966 Winter School will be held January 24-28 and the 1966 statt semi- nar will run from January 31 to February 4. Both are sponsored by the Canadian Labour Congress education department and the B.C. Federation of Labour. The winter school is open to officers, stewards and members of local unions and CLC regional director of edu- cation, Dan Radford, has urged that unions send as many representatives as pos- sible. All students will take part in general daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and then separate into the advanced course classes which run from 10:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. The courses include: ® Collective bargaining, today and tomorrow — deal- ing with bargaining basics, function of the strike, modern techniques, technological change and contract clauses. Instructor is Grant MacNeil, education director of the IWA. e Shop steward duties — the handling of grievances, case histories of grievances dealing with matters arising out of the administration of collective agreements, prob- lems of arbitration, contract clauses and other matters soncerning stewards’ respon- sibilities. instructor: Ray Haynes, representative of Ke- tail, Wholesale and Depart- ment Store Union. e Parliamentary procedure and public speaking — How to conduct a union meeting, the making of motions, etc. This course is designed to help us express our thoughts clearly at meetings, prepare for discussion, gain confi- dence in speaking and get our message across to the audi- ence. Instructor: Bob Smeal, representative of Airline Flight Attendants Associa- tion. A special subject — Prob- lems facing the labor move- ment in B.C.” — will be dis- cussed on Wednesday, Janu- ary 26. At the staff seminar, speak- ers and instructors include, Max Swerdlow, national edu- cation director of the CLC; Joe Morris, CLC executive vice-president; Henry Rhodes, CLC director of organization; Jack Williams, CLC director of public relations; Dr. F.
