Forecasts of the changes like- ly to be effected in existing steamship routes by the opening of the Panama canal make inter- esting reading now that the great waterway is rapidly near- ing completion. Steamers en route from European ports to Vancouver will take the Panama route, thus saving 6,200 sea miles, as compared with the route via the Straits of Magellan. Steamships from Montreal to Sydney will also use the canal, thus saving a distance of some 2,738 miles. . It is uncertain whether freigh- ters from Europe to Valparaiso will take the canal route, which would save only 2,100 miles, but passenger steamers will doubt- less prefer the shorter route, and will serve the east coast of South America by means of auxilliary ships sailing from West Indian ports, Between Europe and Japan the route via the Suez canal will still be preferred, as at present, since the Panama route would be 1000 miles longer, but between New York and Shanghai the Panama route will be chosen, saving 1400 miles. Between Europe and Australia the present route is only 800 miles longer than will ‘be that via Panama, possibly not enough to cause the abandonment of the former. Aside from the consideration of distance, the journey via Panama obviates the usually rough and stormy rounding of ‘|Cape Horn, and this fact will considerably affect the passenger routes, Steps are already being taken to prepare for redistribu- tion of the coal trade that will result from the change of youte above referred to. British firms are reported to be negotiating for coal stations at Nukulofa, the capital of the Friendly Islands and also of Pit- cairn and Fanning Islands, Uniting the Country Up to the present time Eastern and Western, Canada have been tied together in a business way by a single line of rails along the route of the Canadian. Pacific, This line is to be duplicated 1m- mediately, and in the course of two years at the most the Nation- al Transcontinental Railway and the Canadian ‘Northern. will have their steel laid across that great region north of the Greet Lakes, which seemed like a wedge sep- arating the older from the newer part of the Dominion. When we have four lines of rails the union will be closer, and the settlement of Northern Ontario, which now seems likely tn proceed apace, will further promote the realiza- tion of that desirable consumnia- || tion when there shal! be no break |in Canadian continuity in respect ‘}to population and development from one ocean to the other, This prospect is frought with great satisfaction. Time was when the most patriotic Cana- dians did not feel any too gure that a united Dominion would be physically possible, and critics of the country used to tell us that nature had divided Canada inta three parts, the easternprovinces, the prairies and the Pacific coast, the unoccupied lands of Northern Ontario and the Rocky moun- tains presenting barriera to a complete union that could never be overcome. We know better | than this now and the knowledge should make ua prouder than). ever of our country and more confident of its future, Paasenper—‘‘Why are we .s0 Nate?” Guard—~Well’ sir, the train in front was behind, and this train was behind before besides,” . * | as clatm 2, April 20, 1912, LAND NOTICES SATURDAY, JULY 18, 1912 LAND NOTICES Cassiar Land District District of Cassiar Take notice that Mike Costuros of Vancouver restaurant keeper, intends to apply for permission to pnychase the following described lands, Commenting at a poat planted 1 mile south of Lot 477; thence south 80 chains, west 80 chains, north 80 chains, east 80 chains to point of commencement con- taining 640 acres more or fess, April 14 1912.
