The new party leader served 27 years as a full-time officer for the Carpenters Union in British Columbia, including 18 years as the secretary treasurer of the B.C. Provincial Council of Carpenters. Robson joined the Communist Party at 15, in his native British Columbia and was co-chair of the B.C. provincial executive of the party before moving to Manitoba in 1986. He succeeds Paula Fletcher, who stepped down from the post last fall due to family reasons. : The party must build on.its base in the labor and people’s movements to help initiate a coalition aimed at defeating the federal Conservatives in the next election, said Robson. Calling the fight for peace and a nuclear- free world'a top priority, the special conven- tion adopted a resolution asking the federal government to publicly demand the United States cancel a planned nuclear test sche- duled for Feb. 5.
