10 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 12, 1986 Thousands participate in skiing © Registratioon for the Skiing is Believing Learn-to-Ski program in western Canada is now over and the results are encouraging. About 82 sign-up ski shops and 38 ski areas in six different regions of B.C. and Alberta have cooperated to introduce nearly 15,000 new people to the sport of downhill skiing this winter, despite poor snow condi- tions in many areas. The registrations break down as follows: Northern B.C: Population 210,000. Ap- proximately 13 sign-up . ski shops and nine ski areas in the communities of Terrace, Smithers, Fort St. James, Prince George, Quesnel, Chet- - wynd, Fort St. John and Dawson Creek attracted 3783 participants. Okanagan: Popula- tion 250,000. About 20 sign-up ski shops and seven ski areas in the communities of Pentic- ton, Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm Revelstoke attracted 3477 participants. B.C. Rockies: Popula- tion 50,000. Seven sign- up ski shops and four ski areas in the communities of Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook and Fernie attracted 1092 people. Kootenays: Popula- tion 60,000. Nine sign-up ski shops and five ski areas in the communities of Grand Forks, Ross- land, Trail, Castlegar, Nelson and Creston at- tracted approximately 655 people. Feedback from par- ticipating areas and shops indicates that a large number of people who were introduced to skiing through this pro- gram are already return- ing. If this year’s par- ticipants follow tast year’s Okanagan test market results. it is estimated that over $2.65 million will have been generated into the ski economy of B.C. and Alberta this year from the program.
