The eighth wonder of the world:
UAR’s Aswan Dam on the Nile

The Aswan Dam which is be-
ing built on the Nile with Soviet
aid, has been called ‘‘the eighth
wonder of the world,’’ Construc-
tion of this giant dam with a
hydroelectric power station (of
2.1 million kw) more powerful
than the Grand Coulee will help
to solve a whole series of prob-
lems: it will increase by a third
the area of UAR’s arable lands,
it will provide the country’s ind-
ustry and agriculture with 10
times more cheap electric power,
it will relieve the population
of floods and droughts and will
normalize the navigation of the
Nile.

In 1958 and 1960 the United
Arab Republic and the Soviet
Union concluded agreements on
the construction of the Aswan
Dam and about 100 other indus-
trial and cultural projects. The
total sum of Soviet loans to the
UAR amounts to 113 million
Egyptian pounds, The terms: a
2.5 interest and repayment of
the loans in goods of traditional
national export over a period of
12 years, beginning with 1965.

est of the projects being built
on the globe with foreign aid.
If we were to take the quantity
of granite demolished, trans-
ported and put into the body
of the dam, it would be sufficient
for the construction of 17 pyra-
mids of Cheops,

The Aswan Dam which is be-
ing built in two sections, when
completed in 1968, will look like
an elongated truncated pyramid
spreading across the Nile.
