OTTAWA (CP) Federal
health researchers are
waiting for polio virus
samples from provincial
laboratories after several
cases of the disease were
reported, a department
spokesman sald today.

Health officials in London,
Ont., have diagnosed two
polio cases and suspect a
third. Another case was
confirmed in Lethbridge,
Alta., and another is
suspected in Chilliwack, B.C.

were reported to be annoyed
at Premier Peter Lougheed
for upstaging Queen
Elizabeth and Prince Philip
during their visit to Alberta.

“He looks more like an
electioneering politician
than a premier hosting the
royal couple," one royal
party official said. ;

Officials said an apparent
breach of etiquette happened

Family is in Alberta, ac-
cepted an offer from Mayor
John Bagen to ride in the
mayor’s convertible.

royal motorcade waving to

such behavior distracted the
crowd from the royal couple

-and that only the Queen and

her husband should ride in
an open vehicle,

Also to the annoyance of
protocol officials, the
premier had been shaking
far more hands in the crowds
than the royal couple since
they arrived here Monday
night,

‘at is usual for the host to
shake hands with people
after the Queen,” said an
oificial. “But Mr. Lougheed
shakes far more people's
hands.

Some. observers said
Prince Philip was visibly
irritated at one peint in St. ,
Paul when the premier
followed close on his heels
talking to loca] dignitaries.

A royal party official said
the premier was not briefed
on etiquette, It was expected
that a premier of a province
would know how to behave in
royal company.

polio, a fatal infectious
disease which altacks the
nervous system causing
paralysis, is evidence of the

STILL DEATHS

Federal officials say
people are still dying irom
other communicable
diseases such as measles,
rubella and diphtheria,
despite preventative vac-
cines which have been
available since the 1930s.

Diphtheria, for example,
claimed five lives in 1976 al-
though a successful vaccine
was developed in 1926.

While rubella, or German
measles, is a relatively mild
viral disease, health profes-
slonals warn of disastrous:
effects on the unborn fetus if
pregnant women contract
the disease.

More than 2,200 rubella
cases were reported in 1977
and it was responsible for
.two deaths in 1976.

Avaccine for measles was
licensed in 1964, but 9,062
cases were reported in 1977,
Measles claimed seven lives
in 1976.

Encephalitis, an infection
of the brain, occurs once in
every 1,000. measley cases.
Viral encephalitis was
responsible for 25 deaths in
1978. °

Health professionals, long
concerned about lack af
proper immunization, say
there is no excuse for not
being properly protected
against such diseases.
