It is this defensiveness which makes criticism of pottery difficult. The critic becomes a heretic in the eyes of the faithful and no one pays any attention to him. In fact at present unfavourable criticism would only help to drive the potter's head deeper into the sand. It is time that we acknowledged the role that perceptive critics could play in helping us to think about what we are doing. No artist should deny that critics can help him to realize the significance of his own contribution to the larger scheme of things. To ignore this larger scheme and bury oneself in esoteric practices is to refuse the challenge offered by our environment.
