TOP PRAIRIE FOREST AGREEMENT

Members of Local 1-184 IWA
Saskatchewan, employed by
MacMillan Bloedel (Saskat-
chewan) Ltd. and the Simpson
Timber Company, have voted
to accept by 85% the terms of
the Memorandum of Agree-
ment signed by the Union and
the Companies September 10,
in Regina.

The Agreement, negotiated
by Regional President Jack
Munro, 3rd Vice-President Bob
Blanchard, Local 1-184 Presi-
dent Neil Menard and ably
assisted by Plant Committee

Harold (Bud) Massey, Jimmy
Wizniak, Bjourn Gisslason and

‘the IWA on the Prairies.

The 19-month Agreement
will increase the present base
rate of $3.72 an hour to $5.07 an
hour over the life of the con-
tract.

In addition to the $1.35 an
hour increase a number of
trades categories were given
upward adjustments.

Journeymen holding
Provincial or Inter-Provincial
Tradesmen’s Certificates will
also have their rates increased
to $7.01 an hour.

A number of major break-
throughs were negotiated in

the fringe benefits and include:

e A Cost of Living Allow-
ance similar to the COLA
clause negotiated by the IWA
in British Columbia.

e An immediate Dental
Plan.

e Inclusion into the IWA
Pension Plan.

e Two additional Statutory
holidays bringing the total to
L.

e Improvements to the
existing Health & Welfare
Plan.

For the first time in the IWA
the Union negotiators were
able to negotiate supple-
mentary vacations which
provide that employees with
five or more years of service

with the company shall, in.

addition to the regular vaca-
tion, receive one additional
week of vacation once every
five years. Employees with ten
years of service receive two
extra weeks, those with 15
years receive three weeks and
20 year employees receive four
weeks.

The negotiators were also
able to have the severance pay
increased from 26 weeks to 30
weeks for employees dis-
charged or laid off due to tech-
nological change or
automation.

In a remarkable display of
unanimity delegates attending
the IWA Regional Convention
September 23-27 in Vancouver,
re-elected all incumbent of-
ficers by acclamation.

This is the first time in the
history of the region that an
election for at least one
Regional post was not forth-
coming and indicates the trust
the members have in their
present officers.

Officers elected were Presi-
dent Jack Munro, ist Vice-
President Wyman Trineer, 2nd
Vice-President Stan Parker,
3rd Vice-President Bob Blan-
chard, Secretary-Treasurer
Bob Schlosser, International
Board Members Bill Schu-
maker and Doug Evans, Alter-
nate International Board
Member Earl Foxcroft; Six-
Year Trustee Toby Mogensen.

The delegates conducted a
vast amount of business during
the five-day meet which was
made possible by the coopera-
tion exhibited on all sides.
Fears had been expressed
prior to the Convention that
some membership dissatis-
faction over the recent coast
wage settlement might mani-
fest itself on the Convention
floor.

PENSION NOTICE

Jack Washburn, Regional Director of I.W.A. Pensions,
has written to all former employees of Slegg who were in
employee status as of June 15, 1973, telling them that steps
have been take to safeguard certain pension rights for
them, despite the fact that Slegg has as yet made no pension

contributions.

Of the 155 letters written 28 were returned by the Post
Office as undeliverable. This is because members have
moved, or that their addresses from the records were not up
to date. These members are:

However, it soon became ap-
parent that the vast majority
of the delegates recognized
that the settlement had been a
good ome and they were not
prepared to have the important
affairs of the Union disrupted
by any malcontents.

As well as dealing with a
great amount of business, the
delegates also heard from a
lengthy list of speakers which

APPOINTED

TO COUNCIL

‘Bob Schlosser, IWA Regional
Secretary-Treasurer, has been
appointed by the provincial
government to serve on the
province’s new Universities

Council under the chairman-
ship of Professor William M.
Armstrong, former Deputy
President of the University of
British Columbia.

The Universities Council was
created by the Universities

Act, passed at the spring
session of the B.C. Legislature,
to advise the government on
the programmes, budgets and
capital needs of the province’s
three public universities.
Under the new legislation the
universities will submit to the
Council their own short and
long term plans and budget re-
