A2 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 28, 1990 Watch — =E atti those gas). barbecues | A propane barbecue fire in Thornhill offers a timely warning. According to Thornhill fire chief: Art Hoving, a propane barbecue fire last Saturday appears to have been caused by a defective regula- tor and the fire had burned itself out by the time firefighters arrived. This is a rare occurence, however, says Hoving. -Most fires relating to propane barbecues are much more destruc- tive and usually caused by carel- essness. The two most common causes are locating the barbecue. too close to inflammable materials, like cedar siding or deck railings, or attaching the propane hose in a way that allows hot grease to drip on it, melting the rubber hose and allowing propane to escape. Terrace fire chief Cliff Best reports a number of fire-related calls. Some had the potential of being destructive but he says none resulted in serious damage. On Friday morning there was a grass fire in the 4700 block Davis, and at 4:30 p.m. they were called out to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at Keith and Tetrault. Best says only a small amount of oil was spilled, however, and there was no danger. Terrace firefighters were called to the Inn of the West parking lot Saturday morning and succesfully dealt with a natural gas leak in a converted pickup truck. Best says they tightened a gas line under the truck and the truck was later removed by the owner. Best also reports that a minor fire at the sanitary landfill site north of Terrace occurred on Saturday _afternoon. He says the fire was doused with water and the offend- ing material was. buried by the on-site bulldozer. The only other incident occurred - Sunday night when firefighters were called to a home in the 4700 block Straume Ave. A chimney fire was quickly extinguished and there was no reported damage. There was a minor traffic jam at the south end of Sande Overpass shortly after 4 p.m. last Friday afterncon due to a motor vehicle accident at the infamous Keith/Tetrault intersection. A woman was hospitalized as a result of the accident and the Terrace fire department was called in to deal with what was reported as leaking fuel. Fire chief Cliff Best says only a small amount of oil had leaked, however, and there was no danger.
