Page 2 Ministcy of Envicorment April 39, 1999 Re: Proposed Region-Wide Household Hazarcous Waste Collection Progras On the understanding the provincial government will share 50-50 with the GYRO in the cost of advertising (about 1/3 of the total cost shown for advertising and promotion) and pick up all of the costs (whether they be more oc less than the estimated costs shown in the table) for transport and disposal of household hazardous wastes collected in the region, we are taking a recommendation to our Board in May for a collection day (or days) in each of the areas listed above. The aforesaid cost sharing formula is expected to result in costs of about $469,000 to the province and $96,000 to municipalities of the District. Although Matsqui and Abbotsford are not members of the District, these municipalities participate fully with the District in its solid waste function. Pursuant to this, we would also like to be able to extend the Same service to Matsqui and Abbotsford. If these municipalities were to pacticipate in the program, the total additional cost would be about $ 44,000, of which the province would pay $ 36,500, and Matsqui and Abbotsford about $7,500. In order to proceed with the proposed household hazardous waste collection drive, we will need confirmation from the provincial government on the cost shacing forma: set out herein. Subject to Board approval and subject to timely receipt of a commitment from the Province on funding, we would commence delivery of the program in June of this year. As discussed, the aforementioned program in no way preempts the need of the longterm program proposed in Mr. Marr’s letter of February 21, 1990 to the Deputy Minister, but rather is complementary to it, since 8~10 months would be required to establish the longterm program.
