Spend for peace, not for war. Nationalize the great U.S.-owned industries. Trade with the world. Extend credits to Cuba, to British Guiana, and recognize People’s China! New jobs can be found through new mar~ kets, if the economic cold war is replaced by economic cooperation with all countries. The independence of our country from the present domination by the United States trusts, and new national policies to build up Canada for Canadians, not for U.S. investors — that is the road to national progress. Profits are at record high levels — and unemployment is chronic. Automation and science, which should make life easier, threaten the jobs of growing numbers of workers. Young people face a bleak future unless the economy is made to expand to en- sure them fruitful work. The aim of the 8-hour day was first raised in North America. On this May Day, the workers and their unions ought to dedicate themselves to win a 7-hour, or 6-hour working day. French and English Canadians will unite for these patriotic aims, on the basis of na- tional equality and the full recognition of the existance of French Canada as a nation. Fellow-Canadians: This is election year. We have an opportunity to defeat the candid- dates of the old, discredited capitalist parties, to elect men and women who will speak and fight for the interests of labor and the farmers. The Communist Party calls on you to vote for its candidates where they are nominated, and to vote for the New Democratic Party candidates in other ridings — and to. urge the NDP and its candidates to take up the fight for peace, Canadian independence and sweep- ing economic and social changes to meet the needs of our people. Peace, Independence, Democracy, the people’s needs before profits! Let’s Be Masters In Our Own House! Build a prosperous Canada, in peace, in; which every Canadian shall have a job, and where the great industries are under public control. Demand Seeesal and complete disarma- ment, and an end to war!
