To make a lang story short, that is why the often times wet solls of spring are cold and hostile to seeds that are prematurely put-into them. Nor isit possibie to prepare a good seedbed on them because working ground under such conditions results In a very lumpy surface, which prevents the seed from becoming properly surrounded by soll. Many soils, at this time of year, will still be in this un- desirable wet, cold condition. On the other hand, light sandy soils, or others that have good drainage by virtue of a sloping site, are ready to work now. The soll temperature on such ground will already be up in the vicinity of 4 to 6 C, or even higher. On April 22, a patch of my lighter soll checked out at éC. A soil temperature in that range is pretty cool for most seeds, but there are some that will fake to it kindly, Spinach is a natural, because it actually likes a cool soll situation. Furthermore H's a short-light-periad plant. That means, If seeding is delayed too long, the plants will be approaching maturity when our daylight hours are lengthening, and that can trigger premature seed production jusi abavt the time when it should be ready for the pot. That’s why seeds of this plant should go in now, or at least as saon as your ground Is workable. Don’t forget 100, spinach won’t.be bothered by frost that is almest certain to chill It, between now and mid- Ma: 4 number of good varieties are available, but | particularly like Congstanding Bloomsdale, which most seed suppliers seem to have.
