16 Terrace Review — Wednesday, November 4, 1987 _- Mushroom season | ‘““How much time is left to pick Pine mushrooms this fall?”’ ’ “About a week to ten days,” was the answer — followed by laughter. by Pam Whitaker That is a standard answer by those mushroom pickers that are “in the know” and has been for about a month now. In. other words, a lot of things about the Pine mushroom are nebulous — even mysterious, For instance, it is not really known how they come to grow Local church gets new pastor TERRACE — After two months in Terrace Rick Wiebe, pastor for the Terrace Alliance Church has had no trouble adjusting to Terrace life. According to the pastor, who has replaced Roy Taylor, the congregation seems to be taking the change in stride. ‘‘When a certain pastor stays in a com- munity as long as Roy Taylor has, 10 years, you can usually expect some resentment, but I have been very happy with the way these people have welcomed me to their church,’’ says Wiebe. _ __. Wiebe describes the congrega- tion as eager and waiting to see change, and he feels that the group will be a lot of help as ex- pansion of the church is realiz- ed. “I can’t imagine being able to work for growth without sup- port from the people who attend the church,’’ Wiebe explains. Prior to his move to Terrace Wiebe was in Revelstoke for 2 years and in Dawson Creek for 7 years. His 17-year career as a pastor began after he graduated from the Canadian Bible College in Regina. Wiebe finds Terrace bustling and -positive. “I like the ‘nor- thern way of life,”’ he explains, - “I'd rather live in a place like | Terrace than in a big city. Even though Terrace is small, it has more than communities like Revelstoke have because it is so far away from a_ regional is yours for in the first place. Man has tried unsuccessfully to domesticate them. What they do know is that it has something to do with rains in June. (The biologist that this reporter tried to contact was not available.) According to Lionel Sears of Thornhill, fungi are simply na- ture’s way of breaking down charcoal in the soil; that is why old burns are good places to pick mushrooms, The Japanese, however, view the Pine as much more than a soil refiner. They consider this piney vegetable as much a delicacy as the Euro- ot Rick Wiebe center,” "Terrace has government of: fices that one cannot usually find in a town as long as a major center is within driving distance. Terrace quite simply has most of everything we ever look for in a peans do the truffle. The. mushrooms are trans- ported by air as soon as possible after picking to Japan, where they are auctioned off to various buyers. The Hirowatari’s in - Thornhill have been dealing with mushrooms since the 1970's, They do their own grading in Terrace, so their mushrooms often reach Japan within 24 hours. . They also purchase Chanter- elles, ‘but Yoshiye Hirowatari said that it seems to be a poor year for them, or ‘“‘perhaps peo- ple are just more interested in city,’” Wiebe explained, The pastor enjoys outdoor ac- tivities and believes that oppor- tunities .in Terrace are good. “There's a lot to do for an out- doors person: Terrace people are : friendly and the community has excellent services,’’ Wiebe said. Wiebe is presently dealing with what is considered a young ‘| COngregation with an average age of 30 and enjoys the will- ingness and friendliness of the people. ‘‘My last congregations were young also; I feel positive: with this group that growth will be taken with interest,’ continued, . He plans to get involved in the community and continue his hobby, wood carving, while set- ting aside time for fishing and hunting. Ce Wiebe’s family appears to . have no problems adjusting | either, His wife Helen found a - job quite easily and his daughter Brenda, 12, appears to’like her school. Heidi his oldest daughter, 15, misses her friends, but is adjusting well. ‘‘Over all, I think this was a good move,’’ . Wiebe concluded. , . you! Do you need a break? Tales of a thousand dollars a day brought out more local mush- room pickers than ever before, many of them from out of town - ‘Or province. They’ search the roadsides, backpack ‘farther in’’, ford rivers and even fly into untouched areas by helicopter. But how much money is really being made? Lionel Sears ‘said that an average, serious full time Picker can make four to five thousand dollars in a two month season, the same as two month average wage in many Lines of work. | For every denizen of the deep woods who makes a lot of money, there are probably ten who make rext to nothing (ask. me).
