Russian Makes Desperate Try |

To Join Her American Husband

Police today seized the
Russian wife of an
American professor after
she tried to chain herself
to railings outside the
U.S. embassy to protest
Soviet refusals to let her
emmigrate.

Police guarding the
building moved quickly to
prevent Irina McClellan,
39, and her 18-yearold
daughter Lena from
attaching themselves to
tailings and tore away
their placards which
read: ‘Four ears
waiting for a visa” and
“Let me out to my
husband.”

Mrs. McClellan met her
husband, Woodford
McClellan, who teaches
Russian at the University
of Virginia, when he led a
tour group to the Soviet
Union in 1972, They were
permitted to marry in
May, 1974, but when
McClellan left the
country later that year,

his wite was denied a
visa.

Since then she has
staged protests
repeatedly sought the
help of the U.S., which
has taken up her case
several times with Soviet
authorities.

Mrs. McClellan, who
alerted journalists and
prepared a written ap-
peal to U.S, State Secre-
tary Cyrus Vance, in
Moscow for talks with
Soviet leaders, said she
was protesting “the in-
humane destruction of
our family."

She was questioned by
police at the scene for 90
minutes and then driven
away in an unmarked
car.

asked Emerson if 7a.m.
would suit him better.

reply. "I have to get up to
go to school at that time
anyway.”
