Sabre-rattling parson ~~ By LESLIE MORRIS ev. Denton Massey, OBE, (of the Masseys) has had a mixed er. He served in two world wars, conducted the York Bible (“the largest in the world”), sat in the Ontario Legislature a term and, according ‘to the London Free Press, “has had a e experience in the business world.” ‘No doubt his family’s ownership of a factory had something © with his professional shopping around. Most Canadians € no such luck. ow Mr. Denton Massey has settled down as the rector of Paul’s Anglican Church in Point Edward, Ontario. But he still doubles in politics. At a session of the Canadian Club on Sept. 27 he said the follow- ing, according to the Free Press: “How ean we be so unbelievably un- realistic that, in our supposedly sincere desire for peace ... we cease the development of nuclear defensive power, when surely .we must know that the only language our openly- declared enemy knows. and. understands. is that of the mighty fist, mightier than his own, shaken in his ugly face?” 2 * x % About disarmament, the reverend gentleman used most Mreverential and un-gentlemanly language: ‘“‘This sort. of ing language to a tyrant, drunk with power, and who “esn’t even understand polite Russian, let alone English! . ‘Ouldn’t a child know that a barbarian has no code of honor? 0, we are not calling names when we call him our enemy— Russian has openly declared cold war against us. He made crashing clear his program of world-wide Communist mination, by force, if necessary ... Humanity is to have com- ism forced upon it, and this willy-nilly.” Well, enough of that. You have the flavor of Mr. Massey’s speech. Let’s deal with a couple of his allegations. Who started the test ban without waiting for an agreement? USSR, our “enemy.” ag Who kept on testing nuclear weapons throughout the ban? tance, our NATO ally. 4 Which is the only government to have used the atomic bomb ) to now? The USA, our NATO boss. Which country has said, with patient repetition. “Accept our Oposal for an abandonment of all arms, and we will accept Whatever control methods you propose?” The USSR, our e emy’’? ‘ : i. * BS * ~ Has Mr. Khrushchev, or any other Communist leader, ever vocated “wa@rld-wide Communist domination, by force if 9 essary . . . Humanity must have communism forced upon * and this willy-nilly’? No, and Denton Massey cannot show jot or tittle of proof for his charge. In fact, Premier ‘hrushchev and every other Communist spokesman stands on principle that “communism cannot be exported”; that every ple will choose or not choose communism in the light of Nditions in their own country. * * * | We'll ascribe Mr. Massey’s remark about Mr. Khrushchev’s hability to speak “polite Russian” to his own undoubtedly tery of the superb language of Pushkin. But there is no bt that Mr. Massey can speak the most lurid sort of unpolite lish. And as for Mr. Khrushchev not even speaking English, reminds us of a story our father told us about The Times of London apologizing one day to its readers for the absence t European news and explaining that storms in the English ‘ a had disrupted the cables and “isolated the Contin- & * a He : EPnough for the moment of this sabre-rattling parson. Let us ®ke a look at another spiritual leader, Rev. L. C. McHugh. He “atholic morality for a citizen to use violence to keep his ®ighbors from entering the family fall-out shelter after a uclear attack. He gave this blessing to the panicky U.S. r itizen who said he would pick up his Betsy Ann and shoot his t-door neighbors if they tried to come into the family shelter ng an attack. * * # Tesident Kennedy and the Pentagon generals talk about leads talk about shooting down one’s next door neighbor, and this lic immorality brings moral approval from some priests and Sons who always can be found ready to bless the state. There are some who won’t be put into such position. Denton ey was answered by four Anglican clergymen from St. Somas. In a letter to the Fall Press they repudiated Mr. Mas- ’S speech and quoted from a resolution to the Lambeth Con- nce of Anglican bishops: . . . nothing less than the abolition . War itself should be the Baal of the nations, their leaders and . Citizens.” The bishops followed this up by demanding “the *bolition by international agreement of nuclear bombs aoe other 4 apons of similar indiscriminate destructive power.” te in the Jesuit magazine America that it is good traditional. ‘gITH two weeks left and 600 subs needed the situ- ation is urgent.
