At the inaugural board meeting Dec. 1 trustees passed a recommendation from the Education-Personnel Commit- tee that will require. parents to - Sign an authorization to remove their children from the program. The recommendation differs from a previous motion that would have required a: signed authorization to put children i in- to the program: Director of Instruction Harold Cox: said the “‘opting- out’’ approach was adopted by the board because it will result in more students being enrolled in the program and create less ad- ministrative paperwork. In a letter to the board, Bowering stated, ‘““No student should ‘be allowed to die of ig- norance, and as School Medical Officer, I strongly advise an ‘opt-out’? approach... ”’ Bowering said in a later inter- view, “I think it’s important. My concern is that all children in B.C. should take this course.” The course was designed by the Ministry of Education, part- ly in response to the escalating public health threat of Acquired Immune Deficiency Disease (AIDS), to promote healthy lifestyles and living habits in young people. Anyone who doesn’t want to go through a family doctor can have the sample taken at the Skeena Health Unit, where staff nurses are specially trained to counsel victims of the disease. When asked if the Northwest ‘medical community is prepared -.to treat AIDS, Bowering said, **There’s no particular reason why we can’t treat AIDS here. DR. DAVID BOWERING: No student should be allowed to dle of ignorance.
