Al? - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 7, 2000 Celebrations planned for aboriginal day CELEBRATIONS are being planned for Lower Little Park on June 21 to mark Na- tional Aboriginal Day. There will be dancing, salmon and tra- ditional foods, and booths, said Terrace city councillor Ron Vanderlee. The city is working closely with local Tsimshian leaders, such as Kitsumkalum band chief councillor Diane Collins, to put on the day of festivities. ; It’s being co-sponsored by Pacific Northern Gas and ICBC, Vanderlee added. . A National Aboriginal Day celebration would be a first for Terrace. The day has been formally declared by Parliament on June 21 the last few years. “There’s nol: many communities that do anything with it,” Vanderlee said. He said it’s a chance to recognize the vital role aboriginal people play in the northwest. : Native people make up about 10 per cent of Terrace’s population and 25 per cent of the entire northwestern B.C. popu- lation. Dancers are expected from the local Northerner Kitsumkalum and Kitselas bands, and Nisga’a dancers are also invited, There will be booths in the park, he added, and it will be an opportunity for native artists to exhibit and sell their work. ’ He said it may also be an opportunity for Nisga’a representatives to set up a _booth ‘to discuss the implementation of their trealy and the opportunities that will arise fromit, ~The day coincides with similar festivi- “ties in Prince’ Ruperl, so organizers may try to get dancers to shuttle between the two cities and put in double perfor- mances, "Vanderlee,. who is also the regional manager for PNG, said his company is keen to be part of the event, because company offices throughout the north are ‘on aboriginal claimed land and it’s cor- porate policy. to build strang relationships. It’s also city council’s intent to have -elose and productive relationships with local bands. “We're one community dependent on all our neighbours,” noted Vanderlee. new head of women’s group A FORMER northern B.C. resident has been named head of a Canadian women’s rights group. Terri Brown, a Tahltan from Lower Post who grew up in Telegraph Creek north of here, was elected president of the National Action Commiltee on the Status of Women (NAC) in Ottawa, May 27. Brown is the first aboriginal woman to lead NAC, which focuses on developing gender equality for women. It?s an umbrella organization of women’s rights groups from across the country. “Tt takes a revolution in this country in order to change things,” said Brown. “Feminist women need to change things drastically in this country.” Brown recently turned down an invita- tion for NAC members to join the Cana- dian Alliance, noting the conservalive political party “didn’t support aboriginal people and people of colour and immi- grants.” Brown’s actions stem from her belief that Canadian politics is male-dominated and needs a transformation. “It’s not by walking around and being nice and being ‘yes’ people and being a doormat. That’s not our role,” said Brown. One of her immediate tasks is to lobby Hedy Fry, the federal minister responsible for the status of women, to change the way it grants money to NAC, Fry’s department-used to provide a core grant to NAC but now gives money for specific projects only. Brown wants to revert to the former system. After graduating from Simon Fraser University with a bachelor in economics, Brown spent almost 20 years working on various community-based projects to help women find employment after escaping abusive relationships. ‘AWARENESS CLINIC #230 - 4741 OSTEOPOROSIS ,, Lakelse Avenue, Terrace eSkeena Malle Wednesday, June 21, 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Osteoporosis Screening Fracture Risk Assessment with Heel Ultrasound Osteoporosis Education Learn about the most serious health problems caused by Osteoporosis.
