COUNC REPORT APR - 8 1974 TO: Mayor and Council DATE: April 5, 1974. FROM: Parks and Recreation Committee The Parks and Recreation Committee met on Thursday, April 4, 1974 at 3:45 P.M. Present were Alderman George Laking, Alderman Len Traboulay, Mr. Vince Borch, Mr. John Gowans and Janna Taylor. 1. Reciprocal Use of Facilities The Port Coquitlam Recreation Department is responsible for programming recreation for the totul community. In order to provide the widest possible scope in serving the community it is necessary to use as many types of facil~ ities as are available. As indicated in the report "Community Programs for Adults", the Recreation Department has entered into co-operative planning with the Port Coquitlam Senior Secondary School Adult Education Department. Since this report wae given, we are extending our co-operative planning to the Junior Secondary Schools and the Elementary Schools. By September we hope to have developed this concept of co-operative planning to a level where we are able to offer extensive community programs to every age group. Inherent in this co-operative planning is the agreed sharing of certain equipment. For example, we are going to borrow two sewing machines from the Port Coquitlam Secondary School for the Senior Citizen's Program. Last summer we had the use of two schools for the summer program. The major benefit of being able to use these facilities is that we do not have to pay a rental charge. In many other ways school planning has been arranged so that facilities are made available to the Recreation Department as well as other community agencies, to further our joint plans in the development of full community education programs. The Parks and Recreation Committee feel that this joint planning has set our program ahead of many other communities by these co-operative measures. To further enhance this co-operative concept and te encourage a wider use of schools, the committee feels that it would be in order to make the following recommendation to the Council. ‘ Recommendation: The Parks and Recreation Committee recommends that where the Recreation Department has negotiated sharing arrangements with schools; that the Department be empowered to provide for such schools some free time at the arena. This time is to be during the normal school day. Further, that the school times would not interfere with the recreation programs already in existence. JT/£m
