i ~ in several years. : Do you think the local. : - economy is beginning to. ~ stabilize? Gery Wilson ‘Yes, temporarily. We're so vulnerable to the woods in- dustry with little diversifica- tlon that we're subjected to market changes. For exam- ple, lumber tariffs, U.S. con- ‘sumption trends, American/ Canadian dollar ratio changes. We can have an unemployment rate of 25 per- cent In 60 days. Industry is staying lean and mean because of the last reces- sion scare, and the con- sumer would be weil advised to do the same. Candace Pritchard I think the area has been stabilizing for the last two years and has been steadily Improving. We still need to get away from the bust and boom syndrome that mega projects feed. Boyce | - Terrace - Letters “Terrace Review — Wednes day, Al wt . toe Fa Heritage, An open letter to Mayor Talstra and Council: I was very upset when I read in the paper about the fate of the old police building. To destroy one of the few remaining old buildings in Terrace would be an absolute disgrace. To say that the building doesn’t fit into the ‘‘theme’’ of Heritage Park is ridiculous, The important fact is that it is a heritage building, not that it is not made out of logs. Is ‘*'We the people’, a quote from ‘the Constitution of the United States, was recently used by President Ronald Reagan in his speech to the Republican Convention in New Orleans. This is a phrase which seems far removed from present day . politics in British Columbia. ‘‘We the people’? — three short words which sum up the responsibility elected officials should have to the electorate. It should not be a case of ‘us’ and ‘them’. President Reagan went on to say that the presidency is not an office to be given away, but rather a position entrusted on behalf of the people to the chosen. In my mind, there is ab- -solutely no difference in that — respect between the Presidency. _ of the United States, the Prime Ministership of Canada, or the Premiership of a province. Such high offices are a sacred trust placed in an individual by ““We the people’’. Except for a very short twelve hundred days, British Colum- bians have placed that trust in’. consecutive . Social Credit premiers, who for some thirty- six years have returned prosperi- ty and stability to this province. We have placed an enormous amount of confidence behind _this trust, and when it is broken we are left at a distinct disadvan- tage, Social Credit philosophy, Social Credit policies and pro- grams, more importantly Social Credit members and supporters, have made British Columbia Frank Donahue or logs? Heritage Park a place for heritage, everything must co-ordinate?: If the latter is the case, which it ap- pears from the newspaper arti- cle, then it’s not a heritage museum at all. Surely, something as impor- tant as the old police station can be saved. Something must be - done. If it is torn down it would be a real shame. G, Holtom Terrace, B.C. Trouble at the top To. the Editor; what it.is today, through party leaders who, by listening, have done the will of the people. When it comes right down to it, that is what leadership is all about, When it no longer exists, the very roots of any political party are in jeopardy. As one born, raised and residing in this province for the fifty-three years of my life, my appeal to those who care as I do about the future of British Col- umbia, is to take heed. If we don’t, then as someone has already pointed out, ours is a party in the autumn Of its life. Jack J.
