There are many ways. The Soviet
Union has direct railway service with

one can get to Stockholm, Montreal,
Oslo, London, Antwerp, Amsterdam,
Helsinki, Beirut, Famagusta, Alexan-
dria, Yokohama and many other ports

Tourism in transit

Transit trips are important for those
travelling from a far-off country, such
as Canada. Intourist offers big con-
venience to transit travellers.

The short cuts from Europe and
America to Asia, from the Middle East
to Scandinavia etc., lie through the
Soviet Union. That is why a trip across
the USSR is cheaper than any other
way.

Such a trip does not only save time
and money, however. Even a short
transit trip across the USSR will give
the traveller many new impressions.
For instance, travelling from Moscow
to Japan by train along the trans-
Siberian railway, one will see Siberian
cities, the world’s deepest lake, Lake
Baikal, visit Novosibirsk and go on ex-
cursion to the famous Science Town—
the biggest modern scientific centre
built in the taiga in a short span of
time.

Around the USSR by car

The roads of Russia and the Ukraine,
Byelorussia and Moldavia, the North
Caucasus and the Big Caucasian Ring,
and many other interesting places are
awaiting those who choose to travel by
car.
If you find it rather expensive to
bring your own car along—from Cana-
da, for instance—you may hire cars or
buses from Intourist in any Soviet city
that has an Intourist branch in it.

To lighten the customs and border
formalities, six departure points have
been opened on the Western frontier of
the USSR, while in the south-east the
tourists can proceed as far as the Tur-
kish border.

What will foreign tourists see

in the USSR?
At present, there are more than 100
itineraries for foreign tourists in the
Soviet Union. They take tourists to the
biggest cities—the capitals of all the
15 Union Republics, in the first place.
Besides, the enthusiasts of old archi-
tecture will be able to visit the ancient
Russian towns of Novgorod, Pskov,
Vladimir and Suzdal with their world-
famous churches, monasteries and
other old architectural monuments. On
Kizhi Island (Lake Onega) the tourists
will see a real wonder—a 22-tower
wooden cathedral built without a single

nail.

A trip through the USSR can Satisfy
most varied interests. From this year
on, Intourist gives its guests hunting
facilities. If you want to shoot a bear,
go to Siberia; a mountain. ram, to the
Transcaucasian Republic of Azerbai-
jan; a deer, to the Crimea Peninsula on
the Black Sea coast.

Art lovers may attend art festivals,
such as Moscow Stars, Russian Winter
and White Nights or Art Decades of
the National Republics, with the best
Soviet composers, performers and
whole companies taking part.

Foreign tourists may take treatments
in the Soviet Union. “Intourist” sends
its guests to many of 400 Soviet re-
sorts. One of them, Sochi-Matsesta, has
mild sea climate and salubrous hydro-
gen sulphide spas. Metabolic, respira-
tory and digestive disorders are treat-
ed at the Caucasian resorts of Kislo-
vodsk, Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk.
Yalta, the Crimea, is recommended to
those suffering from nervous and car-
diovascular diseases.

Those keen on winter sports are offer-
ed a choice of high-mountain sports
with comfortable hotels and ropeways.

Intourist also arranges for business
tours, during which a tourist will meet
representatives of the business world
and various fields of science and art.

All this, along with reasonable prices
and very simple passport formalities
(tourist visas are issued five to seven
days after application, at the most)
makes a trip to the Soviet Union very
interesting.
