Second class mail registration number 1560 IDITORILAIL COMIMUEINT Tory bribes billed to us If the Tories have their way, taxpayers will fork over not only millions but bill- ions of dollars to buy votes for Joe Clark. _ They are offering bribes as racketeers offer “protection”. And it’s our tax money they are using. First they empty the treasury with bribes for Tory votes, then they try to fill it by selling every- thing they can dig up, pump up, or cut down which belongs to the Canadian people, for the fastest dollar offer. Quebec is to get $200-million if it sells its soul to the Tories. On Jan. 6 Clark promised Quebec vot- ers energy projects worth $200-million. Of course, he hasn’t yet promised them- self-determination and he never will. But anything for enough seats to put monopoly’s iron grip on the throats of Canadian workers, including Quebec workers, to drive their living standards down! Speaking of buying votes for dollars, the Tory masterminds and their jolly jumper, Joe Clark, have decided to “give” Canada’s offshore resources to their Tory and Social Credit buddies on two coasts. Instead of giving Newfoundland Premier Brian Peckford a franchise for robbing Canadians of their resources, the federal government, if it cared about anything but stripping Canada while it clings to power, would integrate the long-suffering people of Newfoundland into development plans for a unified Canada, into job creation, into social benefits. : So blatant is the Tory crudity that one wag has assured us it is untrue that Clark has agreed to recognize Hanoi as China’s capital and to move the Canadian em- bassy there. Generations of workers have been through this fake, stage-managed “war” of the two parties of monopoly capital- ism. The corporation bosses switched, last election, from Liberal to Tory, as revealled in a Financial Post poll. They figured the Joe Clark Tories. would re- spond better, extract better returns for them from the exploited majority. But it’s not the workers’ task to run from propping up the big business To- ries to propping up the big business Lib- erals. it’s time to stop being stampeded! With some of the top New Democrats too opportunist to be convincing, in- cluding Ed Broadbent with his mouth full of garbage about Afghanistan, the: answer is, where possible to vote for the party that has never deserted the work- ing class — the Communist Party. Workers across this country have seen Communists work and battle in their in- terests in unions, labor councils and con- ventions. Isn’t that so? And Communists will battle even harder in the boss-run parliament. It would be something to see. But the Communist party has no go- it-alone policy. What the Communist Party calls for is the election of a progres- sive majority — including Communists — but a majority pledged to workers’ struggles in parliament and throughout society. ; -That is the way to defeat the Clark bribery; that is the road to real change. Conspiracy against the truth about Afghanistan The conspiracy against the truth or- ganized in the White House, the Penta- gon and the CIA headquarters, and readily lapped up and re-broadcast by the Canadian Tories is a big step toward world war — and unimaginable riches for the armaments monopolies. They are gleeful as Carter swings the USA (and the Canadian Tories, Liberals and New Democratic leadership) toward a war footing — by way of intensified cold war, boycotts, terminations of agree-- ments, etc. And the entire multi-billion dollar bonanza for the war-plotters is based on a lie. The Canadian people are asked to swallow that lie and allow it to grow in- side them like a cancer until it devours them. In that way, the garbage dump of imperialist ideology is to be “renewed” with a new wave of anti-Soviet, anti- communist, anti-socialist hysteria, and as" history proves, culminating in anti-labor and anti-democratic suppression. . The Soviet people and their govern- ment have shown themselves the greatest champions of peace. Their 20 million dead in World War II is always a reminder. And noone in the USSR reaps profits from war. Honoring a treaty with a neighbor is another matter. The CIA plotters would like it if such treaties were not honored, if the Soviet Union refused to come to the aid of a country which calls for its help against imperialist intrigue and counter-revolution. » Undoubtedly, many well-meaning Canadians, fed by the monopoly- controlled media, think they are getting a genuine evaluation of what is happen- ing in Afghanistan. But, suppose that Chile had had such a treaty with a friendly neighbor, and suppose that the CIA and the U.S. corporations who bankrolled the murder of President Al- lende and staged the fascist coup had been foiled. Would the same people have said then that it is a “barbaric act”? Would Broadbent have used those words then, because fascism was being stopped in Chile? These are times when working people have to da their own thinking, not be led like know-nothings by the imperialist propaganda machine. . What is it then that the liars in Washingtonand Ottawa want? They want to put down and destroy every sign of a people freeing itself from the imperialist stranglehold. Their conspiracy against the truth about Afghanistan is a major weapon in their arsenal. It’s a weapon of war. And it’s aimed at you! PACIFIC TRIBUNE—JANUARY 18, 1980—Page 3 POSS NO ee ON, ET
