Life $5 full of choices. Choosing one thing.can often mean giving up ~ something else. By protecting a natura! area, we may not have a housing development where people could live, or a factory or an oil well where people could work. It may also mean giving up activities such as hunting, trapping, fishing or plant harvesting. Yet, if we do not protect natural areas, plants and wildlife disappear and may even go extinct. A few years ago a Protected Areas Strategy was developed asa method af choosing which areas of our province to protect, but the choices are difficult, Many different questions had to be asked in the development. What cloes it mean to protect an area? How do we decide which areas to continue to protect? What are the costs? What are the benefits? How can the multitude of opinions about continuing to protect areas be taken into decount? What role should First Nations have in managing protected areas? These are all dilicult questions to answer. These and other topics were shared through the generosity of Alcan and the cooperation of the schools in the Terrace, Prince Rupert and Kitimat areas, These programs brought much needed information to stu- denis about the importance of the special places in our province and the important legacy, which we must uphald in order that our children and grandchildren have special places to visit.
