SPORTS Pirates promise Expos a fight PITTSBURGH (AP) — While Montreal Expos celebrated a winning start, Pittsburgh Pirates said it was just the beginning. “To win, especially that first. one, is always big,” said Gary Carter, whose tie- breaking single in the ninth inning off Kent Tekulve gave Montreal a 6-5 victory Thursday in thelr National League baseball season opener. “It was a good day all the way around," said manager Dick Williams of the Expos, whe erased an early 4-1 deficit with the aid of perfect pitching over the last 61-3 innings. Though the game was threatened by morning showers, the sky was clear when Sgt. Major Regis Ragan, formerly a hostage in Iran, threw the ceremo- nial first pitch. “To all the people of this great cauntry, thank you for everything,’ Ragan told the -qrowd of 40,332 during a pregame ceremony in which he received a lifetime major league baseball pass and a Pirate jersey. Ragan’s spirited toss was in the dirt, and Pirate starting pitcher Jim Bibby" also had some early control problems. ; Rookie Tim Raines drew a leadolf walk off Bibby, stole second and raced. all the way home ona throwing error by catcher Steve Nicosia. , However, Pittsburgh countered with four runs in the bottom of the first off Montreal’s Steve Rogers. Mike Easler and Dale Berra had run.scoring singles and Bill Madlock drove in two runs with a double that bounced off the heel of Ellis ‘Valentine’s glove in right. In the third inning, Montreal scored twice with the help of a throwing error and a wild pitch by Bibby. Berra doubled home — another Pirate run in. the bottom of the third to give Pittsburgh a 53 lead, but that was the last hit of the game for the Pirates. Rogers pitched through the fifth, then veteran relievers Stan Bahnsen and Woodie Fryman pitched two _ perfect innings’ each, in’ D BLOCKER NATIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICE” ACREAGE HALLIWELL Hobby farm site within municipal boundaries.
