THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0) ll \ MEMORANDUM OCT 22 1979 TO: Mayor and Council October 11, 1979 FROM: F.E. Peters, City Engineer Re: Energy Saving at City Hall Council earmarked a sum of $3,000 this year for making energy saving changes in City buildings. As a result we have had discussions with several consultants and with the B.C. Energy Commission to review ways of saving energy and a great deal of material has been pro- vided by Alderman Mabbett. One of the things that became apparent in dis~ cussions with consultants and with our own staff was that lighting levels in the main offices were too high for comfort as well as in terms of energy used. After dis- cussion with my own staff as well as those of other departments in City Hall, we came to the conclusion that lighting could be cut by one-third to one-half without producing unacceptable lighting levels and that, in fact, the staff would appreciate a cut in the levels to reduce visual discomfort. Accordingly, we have taken over 100 flourescent tubes out of service at an annual energy saving of over 10,000 kilowatt hovrs and a cost saving of over $300. In addition to the energy costs saved by the reduction of lighting, we would expect that our air con- ‘ditioning costs would also be reduced because of the lower heat generation from the lighting. The amount saved in this way is difficult to estimate. We would also be replacing fewer burnt. out lamps on an annual basis and this will also result in some cost savings. There may be a requirement for some desk lamps to provide direct lighting on work areas that need a higher level of lighting and the costs of these will be taken out of the energy saving fund. {| — F.E.
