She was also an ac- complished poet and an artist. A tribute to her is on display now at the library. A tribute to a pioneer ‘AT THE LIBRARY tis month you'll see a display in tribute to Hilda Skinner, a ‘Copper City pioneer lady. With the help of some close friends of hers, I have put together a collection of her poems, watercolours and photographs. Hilda Skinner was born in England as Hilda Mary Chichester. When she was seven-years-old she moved with her brother Teddy and their mother to a raw and undeveloped country named Canada, and sctiled in the Skeena Valley. After the fog and scot fiom the heavy industry in England, Canada was a relicl Hilda enjoyed living in a cabin with a red hot stove, drinking water from cold, clear creeks and brea- thing fresh air. He ran a slore at Copper City. But Hilda preferred to be outside. The beauty she saw every day prompted her to write poetry. At times though, a thread of sorrow or anger runs through her poclry —- a sadness that this untouched nature has been lost ta us forever, Hilda also wrote poetry expressing her contempt for a govemment that author- ized companies to despoil the forests, foul the streams and pollute the air. And she recognized and loathed mean ambition, for early on in her life that same mean ambition cost her ber brother Teddy in a battle during the war. He died his first day in the trenches, These conflicted forces in her life were seen through her poetry. One set of verses dwelt on the beauty of the region, the next talked of the same beauly but mourned its loss. Hence every poem must be read for itself. Sadly the last few years of Hilda’s life were filled with sadness. She is gone now, but we can still reach her through her poctry. So I invite you all 10 come down to the public library and view the display of Hilda Skinner.
